agreed %100, rent a skid steer with a grapple if you know how to run it and you can do the work of 20 to 30 men, just use your trailers to take home the stuff you want to break down

I am sure I could, but the thing is, I stopped primarily dealing with pure scrap metal recycling over a year ago, when the price dropped to 7.5/lb and has been that way ever since. Bad news is, is they are the highest paid around. When I did free pickup, I would get upwards of 10 pickups a week, but with high gas prices, and some being an hour or more away, wasn't making any money. Now that I charge, I am able to make a little profit, but to be honest, I make a lot more with pure junk removal and electronics recycling, and reselling stuff on ebay.

Thanks for the tip on the donuts. I will be sure to definitely hook them up, depends on what we work out.

This is what I am hoping for. According to my wife's uncle, they tried that, and for some reason werent able to get it done...not sure why, but I know some of the higher ups, so I might have a chance, especially for all that stuff.

Unfortunately, when it comes to heavy or any type of machinery, I know squat about them. But if necessary, I make a phone call, I can have some solutions for sure.

Thanks to a post a made to my new facebook fan page recently, a lady emailed me the name and number of her husband who loves classic cars, farm stuff, machinery, etc.

Plus, last time I put an ad on craigslist in the farm and garden section, I got several good hits.

This seems absurd that at $150 a ton you can't make a profit. That might be lower than many of us are getting but it is still a substantial amount. Especially when there is probably tons and tons of steel just sitting on that property. There would be no reason that you could not haul in 10 tons a day with your equipment available.

I participated in the cleanup of two like jobs that you were presented with and steel price for us was 135 a ton at the time. We had 2 trucks, one trailer, and one cutting torch. WE MADE BANK! When something like this arises you show up with sledge hammers-a-swingin!

gb, i try to support you i really do, but you say you will hook them up with the donuts AFTER you talk to them and what you work out????????? As far as the loader they are not that hard to learn to operate, it takes years to be expert but you can get the basics in a few minutes. when learning you will scatter stuff from one end to the other and dump your bucket and dump out a little piece of steel. if your operation is as big as im thinking it is it would be in your best interest to learn. if its not too late take the donuts before you talk to the guy with the scrap and at the scrap yard, good luck

When I see a thread like this happening, it's good to see that things are getting pointed out that I'm not the only one seeing. One and One doesn't always come out to add up to Two.

George, It sounds like you guys are under the gun as far as time is concerned. Most yards have a catagory called long steel which is farm equipment that they cut up at the yard. The current price here is $270/ton. I like to torch off the easy stuff as prepared and haul the rest in as long steel.

See if you can rent a skid steer w/ grapple and a set of forks for 2 weeks. If you have a farm implement dealer the rental price will be cheaper than a regular rental place. Heck you can probably even have it delivered. You can learn to operate in 5 minutes if you are out in the open, hell it's actually enjoyable and you'll never regret it.

Might be cheaper to hire a guy that owns a skid steer. One rental yard here charges $125/day. It adds up quick, plus if you've never operated one, (though they are fairly quick to learn on) starting on a project that needs done quick might not be the way to go.

    UPDATE:

Finally met the guy at a local BBQ joint that my father in law and his band play at last Friday. We talked for about an hour or so. The guy is super crazy, but in a good way. Very laid back and chilled.

Apparently the county has no bearing on the situation. The land belongs to his gf, and her father passed away, and left it all to her. So they want to get rid of all the "junk" and use the monies to help spruce up the farm to what it used to be way back when.

The guy told me that if he had to guess, he would say there is easily over 500,000 lbs of metal, aluminum, steel, farm equipment, copper, brass, you name it. Great thing is, is that he has equipment on the farm and in place to crush anything that needs to be crushed, and pickup anything that needs picked up and laid on a trailer.

The guy informed me that if it wasn't for what they wanted to do with the monies, they would give me a better deal than 50/50. I told him that since he has equipment on side to crush and pick up stuff, and only having me there, then I am cool with a 50/50 split. Plus, the way I see it, even if everything was sold for pure shred price, at the current price for me, I would still easily make over $18,000...but considering there is tons of aluminum, brass, copper, farm equipment, I am looking at more than that.

I have a few sources that will buy any and all farm equipment at above scrap prices from me, and God only knows what else is there.

We are trying to set something up for one day this week for me to come out, scope it all out, and begin the work.

Since we both work full time, I am waiting on a day for him to be available to show me the property and all the items I am authorized to take. Then from there, it will be a sweet, sweet surprise.

Although, for this job, I might use my father in laws pickup, instead of mine, since his is a dually, and more than capable of hauling very heavy loads.

If you get yes sounds like the deal of a life time . often with exception of the obvious copper or brass most people who have piles of stuff don't know the hidden value of many items I hope time constraints don't infringe .You can always trade some of you found MIX weight for weight with items in need of dismantling .
