MAJOR scrap metal score! cha ching baby!

Last night, my wife and I were at her parents house for dinner. Her uncle who lives there, came out of his room, and asked me if I was busy. Joking around with him, I told him yes...then he said "ok, nevermind then"...then I told him I was kidding..then comes the GREATEST news of all.

He asked me how I would like to cash in on a HUGE scrap metal score. Only catch is, is the owner who is friends with the family, wants a cut. Told him that depending on what the guy and I could work out, im in. He said the guy was very reasonable, and as long as he got something, he would be good.

I then proceed to ask him, what he has. He says "anything, and everything you can possibly image"...he said cars, motorcycles, buildings, machinery equipment, you name it!

He said, they had a guy that was hired originally and then let go, because he would make 1 trip a day, and then go home, and the need the stuff gone like NOW!

He said, that the owner told him, that if I had 40 roll off dumpsters placed on the property, it still would not be enough for what all is there.

So, this could be the score of a life time. I am calling him first thing in the morning to discuss the arrangements and see if we can finalize a good, workable deal. I am willing to make him a fair offer on the net profits, and I am sure, it will be something he cannot refuse.

Luckily for me, I have tools, cutting tools, 2 different trailers, possibly 3, and then another associate who also does scrapping that I can call on for the really big stuff.

I will be dreaming of all the wonderful fortunes to be had!

No worries. I fully intend to take plenty of pictures, so I can relive the moment in the future, as this type of score, may never come along again.

While I certainly hope it's a large haul, I have found it's best not to count my chickens before it's all said and done.

My wife's uncle is not one to bs around, especially when it comes to money (whether he is making it or something else), but I do fully agree with you.

That is what I am definitely counting on. I plan to go look ASAP, and get a game plan going. I can easily contact my scrap yard and work out a deal for a couple of dumpsters.

Yes, in NOVA...probably about 30 or so minutes from me. Most likely in the country some where, I am assuming.

Won't know about needing help until I can physically see everything.

As long as the guy and I can work out a beneficial agreement, it will be good. They are in a time crunch with the county, so they are a little against the wall. However, I am more than fair, as long as I am making a good profit when I am doing all the work.

Make sure you negotiate with the scrap yard. If there is anywhere near as much stuff as you were told, you should be able to get a higher price.

You and I both. Unfortunately, metal is really low right now (7.5 cents/lb) so, unless we can do a 50/50 or 60/40, on net, it won't be worth doing, as I wont make really nothing. But we shall see.

I wish! I am hoping to get out there tomorrow or by Friday at the very latest to try and get a load or 2 and some pictures. Then with the pictures, do what I can to discuss a better pricing deal. Regardless if they do or not, not like I will have much of a choice.

GB as much as you haul you shoulda been off the basic price sheet a long time ago, i get a minumum of %20 on all items but on breakage i get sometimes double, regardless when you negotiate your price take enough donuts for the whole yard

you might even be able to work a deal with the yard on some rolloffs so they drop off and haul and all you have to do is stay onsite and load them, might be cheaper than hauling it yourself factoring in the labor hours
