Oh ya the HHR is a 4 banger gets 22mpg. Its for the the little one on the way
1998 gmc 2500 club cab, 454, short bed... problem is its too nice for a scrap truck.. any suggestions on how to use second truck for scrappin?..... would it be worth it to try and get incorporated and buy a cheap scrapper rig... I just dont know how to run the business aspect of it.... Any tips??? I cant pay insurance on all 4 vehicles... wondering if all mileage and wear and tear is deductable... may be one of you guys can recommend a book on how to run a business... pm if you want..... Gerald The Total Noob..
I had an '82 dually 454 and I pulled the factory carb off, put a 2 barrel Holley on (off of a big block Pontiac) and added headers with 3" dual exhaust all the way back; and that truck would get 12 mpg loaded hauling campers and 16-17 empty coming home. The fuel injection ruined them, fuel mileage wise.Quote:
I bet I can make everyone feel better about there gas mileage... I have a 94 Chevy 2500 with a 454.. Gas mileage is 6mpg... but I have pulled some serious weight and it doesn't feel a thing
I have a 2006 chevy 3/4 ton diesel. I originally bought the truck to haul my jeep to the trail but lost the jeep and trailer in a divorce. Got tired of the high truck payment so I put the truck to work for me hauling scrap part time.
1995 Dodge 3/4 longbed Cummins 2wd paid $2555 from online bankruptcy auction 240K miles
1991 Dodge 3/4 longbed Cummins 4x4 paid $3000 from local thrift store donated to 100K miles
1992 Chevy S10 flatbed 2.8 V6 5 speed paid $1100 craigslist 180k miles

18' Carson steel deck flatbed car trailer paid $1100 craigslist, put $250 harbor freight 9k winch on
16' Carson wood deck flatbed car trailer paid $1100 craigslist, put $300 smittybilt xrc8k winch on
Car dolly brand unknown paid $250 craigslist
Scrapping cars paid for all of that stuff when I started out I had a 88 chevy suburban 454 fuel injected that got 8 mpg and a crappy 15' flatbed race car trailer with no winch, come along and a chain all day long, haha. Just had to work hard and wait for the right deals to fall into my lap, the only way I could afford nice work stuff. I also have a 69 chevy tow truck with the holmes 440 wrecker bed/sling but not sure if I'm going to ever use it until I get a buddy to weld a wheel lift on.
I have a 92 dodge dakota 5.2L V8
A 1983 f-250 4x4 4 speed with a 460 in it bored out 30 and a cam in the engine. Working on restoring it too. Its got good interior and outsides near perfect alot better then some vehicles I see that are after it.
I have used it all, shopping carts (before I had a license) , 69 Rambler american wagon w/ no reverse (hauled up to 1500 lbs!),78 Datsun B-210 hatchback with 4 by 4 blocks above the leaf springs to keep from bottoming out ($50 car that lasted 4 years scrapping), currently 1959 VW Single Cab truck, flatbed no sides, ladder rack 3/4 ton rating and 31 mpg. Also 74 Ford F-600 cab over 361 industrial, 16 non dumper w/side 7mpg...it better be **** worth it before that gets fired up. I ran a 65 chevy 1 ton 292 6 4 speed for 11 years made a mint when gas was cheap, bought for 600 at auction sold for 600 as scrap!!
2000 Dodge 3500 Cargo Van with 5.9L Magnum V8. I live in the middle of the city so it's nice to be able to lock it up and not leave items in the back like you sometimes would with an open bed truck.
Had a 95 s-10 Blazer (its a truck to me) could fit a decent amount in it but gas was a pig.
Now I have a 2000 protege that I got for free. and I borrow my old mans HHR for bigger stuff. Gonna actually buy it off him I think, good mileage and can fit quite a lot of stuff.

all i got right now is a 95 f150 4.9 4x4. looks like it got hit by a train, and its got roughly 385k miles on the clock. Still runs like a champ! Looking into some beefier springs in the rear. Drive her till she blows then get another! I'd love to find a decent cummins tho!
im using a soccer mom van to scrap a 1999 plymouth voyager , its good on gas and has a set of balls on it actually lol. i took the back seats out and it gets more room then my 4 x 4 tacoma that i use for real heavy stuff. for personal use i have 05 bmw z3 and an 04 mercedes c280
My main scrapper is a 1993 Toyota corolla. It is amazing at how much scrap I have hauled in that over the years. Probably the best car I have/will ever own. Nothing has ever gone wrong with it and get about 32 miles to the gallon. It's really nice for checking out potential deals.
When I need to haul some larger stuff I use my 1995 E-250. It was my first car I bought to scrap. I payed $250 for it and figure out it only needed a fuel pump. I put a fuel pump in and it fired right up. Have been using it ever since.
Soon I will be purchasing a 18ft trailer, I just need to find the right one.
1997 S-10 2.2 4cyl...extra leafs pretty economical and strong little truck and at 394k it'S almost new !

12X8 tandem utility trailer, and a car dolley.
1952 F-600 with an all steel, Herculese dump bed. I figure when the truck dies, I'll just turn it in with my next load of scrap and triple what I have in it!
I have Studebaker, pickup bed trailer that was made to haul seed wheat. It has high, sloping sides on it. Not the easiest to unload but it can haul a big load!

Oh man....I never thought of that....time to get out the rattle cans!!!! Or, I guess if I ever need to sell it all, I'll start with a posting on the Green Bay, Wi. craigslist!

1981 Volvo 240 5 speed (for small loads to save gas)
6x10 dual axle trailer
5x6 utility trailer (for going around neighborhoods on trash day)
3x8 utility trailer (to pull behind the volvo)
1986 Chevy 3/4 ton 4X4, 350 cu. in., 3 speed with bull low. Low rumbling dual exhaust sometimes makes me feel I'm driving down Thunder Road . Parts are plentiful and reasonably priced. My favourite truck after driving for 46 years. Reliable, capable in the mud and snow, rides real smooth on the highway with a good load on and happily tows a heavy trailer. "Like A Rock"

A beat up 01 F150 7700pkg. I don't have to worry about dents (although I'll blame ya if you're around) :) I'm a part timer, my reg job doesn't allow for the time to go all out. Although, my uncle in law (guess that's how you'd put it) has a '11 Ram 3500 Cummins duelly, 5th wheel, car trailor and a 98 Ram Cummins duelly as well, along with every tool under the sun.....He gets scrap jobs like no one! But, he's been in the biz for a long, long time. At one time he used to clear 6 figures. Then again, I guess it's not really about a truck.....heck, I've seen many a time some guy in front of me with a hatchback or crap*** sedan at the yard who has more radiators than he has teeth and chewing on their lip like it's $30 ribs. To each their own.
1994 dodge 2500 5.9 cummins 5 speed
2002 dodge 2500 5.9 cummins auto

im looking into rebuilding my grandfathers old wrecker its a 1980 3 ton chev with jer dan tow gear and wheel lift but i plan on taking the boom off and just use it to tow the trailer . less headaches and if i leave the wheel lift on when the cars in awkward place i can drop the trailer. pull the car out ,then hook up and load car on trailer. also picked up a 2003 chev 2500 will with a 6 liter so ill be swapping in the motor for better fuel milage then the 454
01 Dodge 1500 4X4 with air shocks. only load I've put on it so far that gave me any trouble was a bed full of bricks stacked up even with the bed rails, she swayed a bit coming down the highway, the engine didn't know it was back there, but the shocks sure did.
