Anyone Here Play Chess?

A RL friend turned me on to a chess app. The one I am using is called Chess Time. I have been playing for the first time in years. The app lets you choose how long you are allowed to take for a move. I am playing one person who likes one day moves. The other two games I am playing are two day moves and the RL friend has 4 day moves. It does not mean it has to be 1, 2 , or 4 days to move, it just means it will give you that amount of time to move before it times out and is considered a forfeit.

You can chat in game and it is nice to be able to consider moves without having to be concerned about getting home or the friend leaving, or some other unexpected interruption.

Whoo boy .... you wanna be careful there T. Chess is addictive! I retired about ten years ago, but i used to average a thousand hours a year in training at the Internet Chess Club. I even went head to head with B.F. or someone remarkably similar to him on a couple of matches.

Anyhow, that was long ago and far away. Seems like a lifetime ago now that i think back in it. It was a lot of fun while it lasted.

If you do happen to get the bug you might check out the ICC. It's a pretty good site for chess.

Thanks. I will check that out. I guess this is the time to say I am only playing for fun. I can quit any time I want.

It was also partially due to a (fictional) netflix show starring a chess prodigy. It was a pretty good show and won some awards I think. I also saw that chess sets were selling out due to the shows popularity and the pandemic.

How did you move from where iit looks like you came from? He would have been in check if you started there.

I just won a game I lost. I woke up last night and realized if my opponent moved the yellowed circled pawn to block the queen from the move I made, I was going to lose and I was going to resign. He moved the queen from where I have indicated to where it is now. I checkmated. I did not tell my opponent the missed move

Humm ... that was interesting T. If playing black ... i think i would have moved moved the queen from D-6 to C-5 to put you in check.

You have to be a little empathic when playing chess. By that i mean ... you not only have to be able to understand your plan, but, you also have to be able to understand what your opponent's plan is. You have to get inside his head and know what he's going to be doing for the next five or six moves.Then you compare that with your plan and see how it's all going to work out.

That was your opponent's mistake. He was only thinking about his attack. So wrapped up in his own game that he never saw it coming.

I wasn't there to see the match, but it looks like he did a king side castle at the beginning of the game. This is something that most Grandmasters do at the beginning of the game to get their basic defense in place.

Yes, he had to stall the queen attack or block it. The pawn move blocked and gave the king an escape I could not counter and he had me crushed in piece capture. A win is a win no matter how bad you play. I will take it. We are playing another game. I will see how I do. I may make it a policy to play any player a two of three and find another player. I will keep a game with people I know just to be connected to them.

It's all good really. Chess is about seeing all the possible outcomes while you are in the middle of play. Then there comes a point where there is only one possible outcome. It's either a win, a loss, or a draw.

It would have been checkmate in three moves if he had shifted his queen from D-6 to C-5 to put you in check. It's just that he didn't see that possibility.

It came to a point with me that the wins and losses weren't important anymore. It really doesn't matter if you are the world champion. There will always be somebody that's just a little bit younger, a little bit faster, a little bit better overall ... and that's all it takes.

Truth be told .... i think i gained more from from my losses than i ever did my wins. Lol .... there was one memorable match where i got my a$$ handed to me by a 14 year old girl from Russia. Good lord .... that little thing was a holy terror on the chess board. That was a learning experience !

Anyhow .... i've rambled on long enough. The main value i found in chess was that's like going to the gym for your brain. It keeps you in shape. It doesn't really matter if you can bench press 50 lbs or 400 lbs as long as you keep working to improve on what you've got to work with.

I appreciate the invite. I did try it yesterday but it wouldn't work for pc ... just android and mac. It's probably just as well. I need a little more practice before i'm ready to play real people again. I've been away from it for quite awhile.
