As one of the food producers here in America, I hate to see so much food wasted. So much produce is rejected in the fields as not desirable instead of not edible. We always get our watermelons from the discarded ones left in my friend's melon field. Many times I've eaten peanuts from the samples from each load in the grading room.
I also used to work in a convenience store and saw the dented cans and torn label packages that were sent back unsold. I started then and still do buy the cans and bottles with torn labels because the contents are just fine and no one else seems to want them.
I don't remember ever getting food from an actual dumpster, but I'm not against eating stuff that is still sealed or bagged right off the shelf. I'd probably stay away from opened prepared foods, that is unless survival depended on it. Then it goes to the "do what had to be done" like bigburtchino said.
