    Can't say that I would do it with food, but anything else reusable doesn't get scrapped. Anyone interested in this should check out "Extreme Cheapskates" on TLC. Some of the stuff they do is even more questionable than food in a dumpster, but they do that too. Check out the episode where one guy buys a goat's head from a butcher with change he found in the gutters. BLAH!
