I know that every yard I have ever been too has this policy.. written and printed or not (At least this is what they preach to be politically correct.) Yard owners know that if THEY knowingly buy stolen items- they themselves are also on the hook. Every yard owner I have ever met has that innate "six sense" to know what "just doesn't feel right" and with any business- they have the right to turn people away.
Sparrow is correct- there are still people/yards that take in items that they know to be questionable in order to "make the quick buck" my thoughts are- if they can sleep at night knowing they are contributing to the problem.. it is tough to stop that- unless there is much more enforcement of the laws.
I remember taking some things down to my core buyer one day. I finished my business and headed home. I pass 2 other core buyers on my way out of town. As I rounded the corner I saw a town police officer standing out there with a clipboard- counting, taking inventory- he was making his presence known.. full uniform, full marked police car parked very obviously. So at least I do see some spot checking being done. Maybe that will be a deterrent to any yards or buyers that knowingly look to take that quick buck?
This can be such a tough industry to compete in with the amount of thieves out there. I have worked to "plant seeds" in order to gain customers. A lot of them have already been burned and are VERY unwilling to even speak with you. I pulled into a body shop once. Guy was overflowing with vehicles that I know have sat for a LONG time. When I approached him about possible buying cars he went on this huge rant about how a guy screwed him over.. and "if anyone ever gets caught back there the local police and the county sheriff will be all over this place." I just thanked him for his time and moved along.
