When I find time I will give a schematic for a simple testing unit a buddy wired up for me. It uses a 110 volt light bulb with an old type cone heater element with a ground and power wire with alligator clips.used for testing electric motors and whatever you have.

The light bulb portion of the circuit acts when testing for short circuits, while the resistance heater coil part of the circuit is for testing electric motors with out electrocuting yourself or making giant arc sparks if the motor is shorted. I love this tester, never experience arcing or blown fuses when testing a motor.or an open circuit in an extension cord.
