Interesting pricing results with fedex ground

Just shipped a load to my buyer that's only 300 miles away. Went fedex ground. I was a little surprised as to how the shipping costs broke down. Here's what I have:

    28 lb box = $23.86 = .85/lb
    35 lb box = $26.29 = .75 / lb
    61 lb box = $33.49 = .55 / lb
    66 lb box = $34.89 = .52 / lb

So, what I see here is the heaver the box the better, up to the 75 lb fedex limit. Interesting. I should have combined my little 2 boxes into one big box and saved around $15 in shipping.

Thank you for this information wdaddy. I have been doing some preliminary info gathering but the person from FedEx told me there was a 150lb limit before the box was considered overweight.

As for shipping you will always get a better price for combining boxes than shipping things separate. I have always considered them as having a base price on shipments whether or not they cost 1 pound or 75 pounds then you pay for the weight. Just for the sake of discussion lets say the base price is 4 bucks and you have 3 packages. Shipped separately you would have 12$ just in the base price to ship a shipment. But if you combined them you only get charged that base price one time. I would like to see a comparison of cents per pound once @ 76 pounds and see how much the premium for going overweight is.

Its the same principle of why a cab ride's first mile is higher than their per mile rate or they charge a flat rate for picking you up them how ever many cents a mile.

Thanks for confirming what I was suspecting. That makes a huge difference on something like midgrade boards.

I too heard 150 pounds from where I drop off at.

Shipping by pallet is around 30cents a pound based on how much you ship and how many pallets.

I think where the 75 lb limit comes into play is to residential drop-off... I'm not used to shipping to businesses so I'm sure that's why my number seemed low. On top of that, I'm a wimp and anything over 75 lbs would stretch the arms to much. Good thing computers are so light if you do them one at a time :P

Well, that's a couple hundred pounds I won't have to trip over again. Now, off to Florida. See ya all in a couple weeks.

The only problem I have is no fork lift, no loading dock, and not much experience with LTL shipments. I have only done around 10 of them... that and I just can't seem to sit on my scrap that long. I need the money faster then I can fill a gaylord.
