    Computer cables

Although I have bought and sold tons of lead over the last couple years I never did anything other scrap until I found this site in Nov. A few weeks back I stopped by a yard sale and was given for free a couple large boxes full of wire, extension cords, a TV cable box, cable wire, a radio, several telephone answering machines, 3.5 external floppy drive, computer cables, etc. I had a blast beating the crap out of things to get them apart and see their innards.

The one thing I didn't cut apart were the computer cables, an assortment of power cords, USB cords etc. Didn't seem to be much copper in them and most looked new, some were still in sealed bags. I know I could have put them on eBay, but that would have been a PITA. Instead, a couple blocks from me is a guy with a computer repair sign in his yard. Stopped by his house today with a shopping bag full of cables and told him Merry Christmas. Told him I was a scrapper, that I had found them in a bunch of wire and I figured maybe he could use the cables. Offered to buy e-scrap from him, but he said he rebuilt computers out of parts, however, the stuff he didn't need or didn't work he would give to me free. It would be worth it to keep his shed clear. Don't know what I will get, but it is bound to be worth more than a few lbs of insulated wire. Even better it will be a reocurring thing and possibly a source of future leads.

Re-use is the best recycle. Do some more reading on the cable ends here. The ribbon cable ends can be cut off and sold to ewaste buyers. Your use of the wires sounds like a great investment. With a little experience you will learn to love breaking down computers. I live in Jacksonville, NC and am a bit of a newbee. I think you are off to a great start for the new year, Mike.

Now go beat the copper out of something, Miked

I have been reading a lot here. Already have a bucket with ribbon cable ends in it thanks to a post here about real estate clean outs. Mentioned to a real estate friend I was into scrapping and she said she had 6 computers to get rid of. Turned out it was only 5 and 2 had been stripped of everything except the power supply, but they came with 6 CRTs, 6 printers, a bunch of other electronics, 2 vacuum cleaners, a flat screen tv and all free.

I do like the computers. I spotted 2 at an auction, but they got sold in with a truck load of other crud I wasn't interested in. So I asked the buyer if he wanted them. Wound up getting both for $6. He mentioned he had stripped 300 computers and the yard would only pay $0.05 per pound for the boards so he had a 55 gal drum full of them. Told him I would buy them and gave him my phone number. That was OK, but I didn't carry it far enough. I didn't get his name or phone number so when he didn't call I had no way to pursue it farther. Live and learn.

Mike looks like you are a couple hours east of me.

fter over 40+ years in business I still do the same thing. I am terrable at getting names and phone numbers. even tho I know it is one of the most important details of our business, or any business for that matter.

That place is a huge ripoff. Expect to get about $.10 to $.15 per pound if you send to them. Go with one of the buyers that posts on this forum.

Where can I find a buyer, on the forum? Sorry I am new to this and have been doing a bunch of reading. I have been asking questions and I find some people get upset with not finding it on my own. If you can help that would be great!

    Thanks

I have been doing a bunch of reading / research. I have not come across anything on the copper that is wrapped around black stuff. Maybe some type of metal, but I have been putting it with my trash pile. Then I stuck it to my magnet and it stuck. Can anyone help?

    Thanks!

It's ferrite. Smack it with a hammer and it will shatter, leaving the copper.

redcrossnj....boardsort is okay, but shouldn't we be recommending the buyers on the forum first ? They have been here a while and have shared an ENORMOUS amount of information which has resulted in a large percentage of us starting to collect e-waste and some to switch exclusively to e-waste largely as a result of their willingness to share. They are forum family....we need to support them. just my .02 as my mentors say !

Throw the ferrite in the steel bucket.
