Hey Mikey, which yards do you go tol? I live in Columbus too.
I get more scrap metal from poorer neighborhoods. But there's this one really rich neighborhood that I drive through every Wednesday night and you wouldn't believe all the nice stuff they throw...
Actually the Senate is the one that backed the 1099 repeal yesterday. Great news! Here is a link: http://www.bizjournals.com/baltimore/news/2011/02/03/senate-backs-1099-repeal.html
One more silver lining is that you could possibly write off expenses such as gas and supplies.
Ok, answered my own question. Google finally came through! The objects I was referring to are the transformer and the heat sink. The transformers are about the size of my fist and weigh about 11 lbs....
Anyone know what the big heavy box(cube) like thing inside a stereo is called? I've been removing quite a few of these recently and there is a little bit of copper inside them. Really easy to...
Thanks for the info. I've broken a few at a time down before, which isn't bad. If the scrap yard won't take them as is, maybe I'll just do a few each night until they're done. I wonder if I could...
Does anyone have any experience scrapping window screen frames? I was hoping to not have to remove the actual screen. Do you think the scrap yard will make me remove the screen before scrapping the...
Not sure. It does have plastic on the bottom but a magnet won't stick to any of the metal part. So....I'm thinking all brass?
Thanks. I pick up floor lamps all the time too, but most of them are all steel so I just usually throw them in my steel pile. This one is brass I wasn't sure if there was a market for these types. ...
Ahh, I do it all the time no problem! Just kidding. :)
Just wondering what you guys would do with this floor lamp? Scrap it or try to sell it. It's brass, weighs about 10lbs and works great. At first I thought it was an antique, but a sticker on the...
Yeah, I've also never heard of alum cans being that low. BTW I was looking through some magazines at the store and on the cover of Bloomberg magazine is a story about copper theft in America. ...
This is my first year scrapping and my only method so far is to drive around on trash night. Since I've only done it in warm weather so far I don't know what to expect in the winter. Should I...
They don't weight that much but I still pick them up and put them with my light iron. Some putters have a brass head.
Wow that's quite a treasure. What does that shredded aluminum come off of?
Thanks for the answer. I guess I won't be getting to that copper or aluminum since I don't have the license (or know how) to rid the freon. :( But I'm not complaining since they're paying for them...
Yep, I had been passing on refrigerators because I assumed I would need to remove the freon. But I decided to call them anyway to make sure. To my surprise they said I don't need to remove the...
Anyone know if there is anything worthwhile to take out of a window air conditioner before scrapping? This is kind of a belated question since I just scrapped two last week, but I hope to run across...
Thanks. Thinking back, at least some of my iron has been thicker than 1/4". Of course the scrapyard won't say anything if I don't.
Mick, could you help me understand #1 Iron? I always throw all my iron into one container at the scrapyard. Is there a way to tell #1 iron from light iron? Thanks.
My scrap yard gives me .20/lb for that gizmo(magnetron?) on the top right. When disecting a microwave I remove the motor and that thing and that's all I remove. Very easy strip job for me because...
Since then I've gotten five more microwaves. I've been taking the motors out of them. Just takes a few minutes, it's worth it for me.
Thanks for the info. I think since this is my first one I'll go ahead and try to break it down, get the glass out and the steel screws and the rest, try not to slice my finger off on the glass. LOL.
Just wanted to update, they took they microwave as is, no questions asked. Thanks for the help.
