    Aluminum Door w/ glass

I found a storm door which I think is aluminum. My question is do I have to take the glass out of it and do I have to take the door apart to get to anything else inside that isn't metal that the scrap yard won't want?

If it has glass, I pass as not being worth it. Check with your scrap yard, but mine wants the glass out. If it has any screws, they'll be steel, to it'll go as Irony Aluminum. If you have aluminum windows with aluminum mesh, they can be easily broken apart at the four corners and the screen is easily removed by prying out the rubber that holds it in. With either windows or doors, pry out the diecast (that piece that slides to let it open and close) and make sure any steel is cut away. The frames are now Extrusion, the insert is Sheet and the mesh is Mesh (not worth the effort). The rest is Light Iron or Diecast.

But storm doors are a lot of labor for what you get. Same for aluminum windows with glass panel inserts. If you haul cars, you might try throwing them in a car. I just hauled about a dozen to the landfill.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

Thanks for the info. I think since this is my first one I'll go ahead and try to break it down, get the glass out and the steel screws and the rest, try not to slice my finger off on the glass. LOL.

One thing with aluminum doors is that they are not a big hassle to break down in my opinion. The worst part is dealing with the glass afterwards. I have bucket that I toss any magnetized screws and bolts in. If you leave them in, yeah, you get docked on pay. Here they call it aluminum breakage which they pay around half of what the price of aluminum goes for. I scrap out everything I get beings I don't do this full time. I collect when I can and spend nights breaking it all down.

if youre the type of person who is very busy & has a lot of scrap to sort- then breaking it down might not be worth the time it takes
but if youre like me, then why not?
u will get paid more for the alum & u can take it as a learning experience- u will know how to break it down & what its worth etc

It's easy to get the glass out:

First thing, put on some gloves. Duh!

Get an old sheet, preferably king or at least queen. NO HOLES! This is important! Lay the sheet down flat on the workspace floor and carry the door over to it. Pick up the corners of the sheet to form a "taco" around the door, then bash the glass (through the sheet) with a hammer. At this point the whole frame will have some give, flex it back and forth & work out any glass. Pick the sheet up, which makes a nice, neat bag around the glass, and pour it out into your trash can.

    Easy Peasy.

I have a shower door out back I need to do this to. If the missus gets home before dark, maybe I'll get her to shoot a vid.
