    Al breakage and stainless breakage

What's everyone getting for aluminum breakage 50%? The yard that I use that typically pays more for non-ferrous only pays .05/lb - same as scrap (aka. "shred"). They actually pay less than that for stainless breakage (stainless with iron) .04/lb .

Found that out the hard way the other day. I am just happy I have a bunch of copper I still need to sell - I just haven't had time. I did have some batteries and ferrous with that load and I actually got more for the non-ferrous than the ferrous - bunch of BMW batteries, a BMW door and some other BMW auto parts from my BMW mechanic/hobbyist ex-scrapper contact (he even had it sorted for me and I didn't ask him to - it was awesome and I am grateful).

Alum. breakage was $ 120 a net ton about two weeks ago. We do not have the option of selling SS breakage.
Give back more to this world than we take.

I have decided it's not worth any time separating out stainless or aluminum unless it can be separated to be clean easily. I will just throw it in the scrap ("shred") pile otherwise, around here there apparently is no point. The "tweaker" yard actually pays more for aluminum breakage, but it's a gamble (for me and I assume other regulars) as to if they are going to charge me their "environmental fee" that load or not. Makes it fun I suppose if you like to scrap gamble. I am not putting down that yard and especially not the people there, but if anything I think they would do better only charing that fee Monday through Friday after 5pm, Saturdays after 2 and all day Sunday and instead call it a "connivence fee" - I know that's how I see it when I am charged that when every other yard is closed.

The convince fee would be a great business idea for the yard, easy to defend.. Have you asked for a waiver based on your volume?

The buy back I manage used to pay at the most 35%. However, our vendors no longer choose to buy huge heaps of aluminum bicycle frames and such.

So, now, there is more work involved and we have to pay employees as well as bills to run the equipment (hydraulic shears, forklifts, etc) to manage further break down of these items.

The price point for breakage after ward dropped to less then 10% of Alum. We just pay the same as shred now a days. It ain't pretty or fun dealinh with that sort of blowback at the scale, but it was a necessary step, I suppose.

No since I don't have that much volume I suppose - I drive a medium sized pickup, but most of the time I have very clean loads between 650-1100lbs. The past 3 weeks I haven't been selling or collecting much so I can't ask them now.

Right now on the back of my truck I have about 700+lbs. of 99% clean ferrous and clean aluminum from one stop this evening, the only thing on it that isn't steel/iron or aluminum in the load is a thin layer of paint on the metal. Zero plastic, glue, or insulation etc...
