Tin is down to $10 a ton, so selling the racks will be worth it

DISHwashers make great storage bins if you take the racks and loose metal out. As you fill it youll break the wash arms off, so its best to break them off at the start. Take the door springs off (super easy) then you have a nice container with a lid. The metal frame will alow you to move it with a strapped appliance dolly without break the plastic tub.

In my oppinion since shred is the lowest tier of steel and such, and since you can throw appliances in the pile, the yards shouldnt make a fuss over a dishwasher nor dock pounds off because its part plastic. If i was going to take my stuff to a yard that paid full weight for it all including diahwashers verses one that docks weight, you can bey ill go the yard that pays doesnt dock. I know that yards have a lot of overhead and such but cut the little guy a break, not scrapper can expand into a multimillion dollar scrap yard and get port prices for steel. I mean the scrappers are the ones beating the street looking creepy snatching up all the steel that big scrap yards broker.

If memory serves me right, the mills were paying 180 to 202 a gross ton last month.
I can't accept any but if you only want 6.5 cents, I might buy the house behind me and convert it into a yard. That's delivered, right? I go through Solvay for everything metal as that's what's closest to me, so my information is based off their yard. If Solvay gives 202 a ton for mixed and Albany doesn't, there's a reason and since neither of us know what that reason is, it's all speculation.

When you're as big a company as him, you can manipulate the market a bit by dictating the import/export rates: thus having a monopoly. It's why when Roth Steel closed up, his business increased. It's also why when he announced he'd taken a major stake in Metallico, people started paying attention.

In its hay day look at this... Solvay scrap yard pays out more than $400,000 in one day | syracuse.com lots of scrap for sure!

Even if he's wrong, I'd take $70 a ton nowdays. I might be able to buy a cheap pizza or two instead of half a pop at $10 a ton.

People underestimate Solvay. It also helps Crucible metal works is practically right across the street. Thanks for sharing that step back in time.

I just spoke to Missy at the Solvay yard. 71 a gross ton for light iron. She does not have a mixed metal price and seemed confused (as she should have been) when I asked her about it. Let me know when you buy that house, i'll send you everything I got.

71 a gross ton is still way better than my 33 a net ton here!

Agreed. It is alot better than the $10 a gross ton my yard pays. I have used the Albany yard, but it doesn't make sense for less than 3000 pounds (due to distance) unless I'm going for sone other reason.

However, it is no where near the 9 cents that was mentioned. Also the scale people at that yard didn't now what Logan was referring to as mixed metal (which dishwashers apparently are????).

What yard are you going to? I just took a load of tin in to Weitsman this morning and they are still paying $71 per gross ton. I was going to ask earlier, but figured that since I was planning on going today I'd wait to see if Weitsman lowered their prices.

Hey Billy, I'm 45 minutes West of Rochester so I go to Dunns in Niagara County. That is the closest for me

Yep, thanks for asking. Wife wasn't feeling well and when they got her to the ER her heartbeat was in the 500s, her glucose was in the 400s, and she flatlined for an entire minute. We're thinking this week's stressors built up and got to her starting with an accident I was in(was taking her aunt home from work and a car cut the car ahead of me off, causing them to stop short and me to hit them. Everyone inspected each others cars, exchanged "are you ok?"s, and left it at that. Didn't help the road was icy. No black ice, but icy.) at the beginning of the week. I didn't think 2 accidents in 12 years was bad. Doctor said to be extra cautious on the road as I'm a couple of accidents from being disabled. Something about bad Gs on the spine.

Was going to call Ben Weitsman yesterday for their latest prices but some rig ran a red light, taking out a pole infront of Rite Aid so all of Liverpool didn't have Verizon services the entire day(just came back 5 min ago). I might call them later today depending on if I remember to (I have a front door to hang from another issue from when we moved back from TN). Some days I feel the entire world is out to get us but then I remember that we have it better then others: We have shelter, heat, running water, and internet/cable. Then it doesn't feel so bad.

Sorry for the hijack, hope OP found the information he was looking for.

Not to call you out, logansryche, enough ppl have commented already, but Beny’s deals with all types of metal, not just mixed. True, he specializes in car shred and probably has the best prices in the north east for mixed metal, but he has been steady at $60/GT since August. I drop off short prep and alli all the time and just started bringing him copper and ss from my e-waste. Also, I know for a fact they take a HUGE % off for tare weight when you bring in any appliances. Crappy part is they are never consistent.

oh, this is in his Ithaca feeder yard which all goes to his main plant in Owego.

It's fine - everyone has their preference. When I started getting into scrapping after moving back from TN, Empire brushed me off like my business didn't matter to them, and Roth was too picky about what they were accepting. There's just something about giving Ben Weitsman/Upstate Shredding my business that feels professional and worth doing. Solvay's a heck of a nicer drive then Ithica too as i'm in Galeville.
