Our state law requires that they be licensed if they are over 800 lbs.

2000 is also the magic number here in Colorado. It also must be under 30 ft. total length. A trailer over 2000# or 30 ft. can also be titled and plated as homemade here, but it must pass a DOT inspection first.....lighting, brakes, etc.

I'd go back to your DMV & inquire about the possibility of a DOT certification for registration as a hevy duty homemade. I had to do this with my bigger homemade and the total cost of getting through DOT & DMV was under $200, but it is both over 30 feet long and WAY over 2000 pounds...over 4000.

Here in CO, after the weight certification, and possible DOT certification, the DMV issues a VIN tag with the title.

It does seem kind of funny though that you found a VIN # that would seem in a inconspicuous place. Usually when the Police Pull you over they wouldn't go crawing around on the ground to look for a VIN #. I guess that could be a second place they put it.

While doing a little more research, I have discovered that all trailers, RV's / Campers manufactured in the USA From 1978 -to- current date have a minumum of (3) locations where the VIN number is permanently stamped into frames and/or components and the three min. does not include any placard, sign, sticker that may be affixed by rivot, welding, screwed or bolted onto the frame or components.

I'm nott sure if I worded that properly, so to clarify it better, if you find a small metal placard with the VIN, there will always still be at min.of three more locations that the VIN is stamped or lazered into the frame or components that are permanently affixed to the frame.

SPECIAL NOTE: When I wrote Reply No. 33 I realized that it may of seemed rather harsh, and so be it, I stand firm on my personal & professional ethics and morals. I tend to tell it like it is, I don't care to candy coat anything.... as the new generation says "I Keep it real" My intentions were not to personally attack anyone or offend anybody, moreso I wanted to bring attention to the potential of this situation and invoke some more positive feed-back.

I sincerely hope the trailer issue is properly resolved.
