SYH..when you came on the forum in Jan, you said you just scrapped for a hobby. You asked for opinions....mine is that you need to pass on this one. I'm sorry some people were so negative in telling you that, but under all that gruffness they mean well. Nobody wants to see you get burned. BTW others...developmentally disabled jokes really offend me.

I gotta agree with dumpsterdee, leave out the disabled jokes. It may do some good for those who have never been in a children's hospital to go to one for a day. You may have a different outlook.

    THIS.

    Call around.

Some will drop off and pick up for free as long as they are buying the scrap.

That's the deal I have on my roll off.

Yep local yard does that here as well they just pay you 20 bucks less a ton for whats in the rolloff. But there is no up front charge for the rolloff. Seems like a win win to me. Specialy if your talking 20 tons of scrap. At shred price you should still clear a couple grand easy.

I'd suggest the rolloff route as well. If you try hauling this yourself with a rented trailer, you still may not be insured properly in case something happens going down the road. It may be a little less money, but a lot less hassle.

Chances are the flues have holes in them and if you tried to heat it up and drain it, you'd have the fire brigade on your ass. Cut off what you can with a torch and dump the pot in the woods somewhere! Remember there double sided with insulation in between. Asphalt and bitumen are considered hazardous waste down here and you cant put that in a land fill. I once purchased a used tar pot myself and lit it up, and let me tell you the flues were burned out, you should have seen the fire!

I would say well said there Marc. BUT dump it in the woods? You will be making no friends here with that lack of consideration!

Not to mention you just admitted to doing this yourself in an open forum for all to read!

I wonder how many of our law enforcement members are here today.

Really, what else can you do with it once its separated? How do you dispose of tar? And how much trash have you found in the woods? Law enforcement huh? Scrap yards depend on thieves to stay in business man, I seen many grocery carts loaded with brand new copper after Katrina in New Orleans and very few arrest's I would think. If you want prim and proper get out of the scrap industry.

No Dew He is saying to dump the problem in the woods for the land owner to have to take care of. If it's public land we pay for it!

I have said already this is not a good scrap deal!

But you sir Marc, You are a old school thinker that is the cause of all the friggen laws being made today!

No you don't have to break the law!!!!! You may but we don't. Good day sir, you are on my Iggy list!

Careful, roofermarc, careful. Not that kind of forum here. Keep it legal. Keep it on the up n up. I know where ya coming from. I seen it too. Don't mean we have to be a part of it. You n me, we the only 2 Louisiana scrappers here. Lets represent our great state well.

No, if you want to do it the WRONG way, then YOU please get out of the scrap industry. I am sure I speak for most everyone hear on this matter. Doing things illegally and/or causing a mess for someone else, is why we are all looked down upon and laws get set in place to make things harder for us.

I just wonder how much of the "woods", you know that magic dump place, is now paved with layers of old fiberglass , asphalt, shingles and old pitch( asbestos).

Dude You personally make me sick!! You give scrappers and roofers a bad name! Are you still using staples? LOL

Question; Who wants a roof put on there house from this fine roof contractor?

Condoning illegal activities on the forum won't be tolerated. If anyone sees this happening on the forum, please report it.

Dang, I tried to warn him. Oh well, please don't get the impression all Louisiana scrappers have this mindset. I admit at one point I thought a little differently than I do now, but thanks to this forum and the members here I now know how to do things correctly, legally, and environmentally friendly. I only hope others get as much help from SMF as I have.

On the tar pots, is there any brass/non ferrous? Never scrapped one, prolly never will, but it might help the OP if he goes forward with this.

i ran a crack filler one summer while i worked for the city. ours had propane tanks and everything inside was basically a large bbq grill. several brass fittings and valves for the flow of tar and a real large valve at the applicator handle
