Tar Pot

Any idea what a decent sized tar pot would weigh? Something along the lines of this?





I have a lead on a bunch of old roofing equipment including a few of these with a 50/50 split. Never done anything this big and I need to rent a trailer but my truck only pulls 4000 lbs. I'm trying to figure out of it is worth my time or over my head. Anyone ever set up deals with the scrap yard and a seller to make a small commission even?

The scrap yard told me they do buy the tar pots. There is some other materials like a shingle conveyor,3 large tarpots, and 5 smaller ones, some have motors, as well as a bunch of steel dolly's.

can't see it being over 4k lbs...probably 1200 at most?

Yes...hook it up and tow it in...don't touch it and don't park it where kids might be tempted to play in it. (visions of Uncle Remus) lol.

The problem is all of these no longer roll, and will not be able to be "hooked up and tow it in". I do not own a trailer or a winch but the place with the scrap has a forklift and crane so I would have to rent a trailer then remove the tires since the yard charges $3/50lbs of tire/rim, and figure out logistics I have yet to encounter in scraping. This is no small roofing company and it is a lot of scrap I'd estimate at least 20k lbs total but what do I know.

Why not? Are the hitches missing? All I can see from the pic you posted is a few flats. Can they be aired up? Lights probably don't work. Get a magnetic tow light set from Harbor Freight.

If you want this, you'll get it figured out.

There is always a way, might not be the most effective or cost efficient but it is possible. Git Er DONE!!

no matter what if you do this job your half should be about 1200, please go buy a trailer if possible a 16ft with ramps so you can haul about anything including cars, always buy tools when you get alot of cash it will help you more than you know

i rather just find the tools in the trash, just got my first angle grinder Monday, thing just needed a new plug put on it. Id agree if your gonna be getting jobs like this its time to get a trailer. **** you get that call for 100 towers and monitors ur gonna need it. just make sure you give me a call to come load it with you ;-p

Some will drop off and pick up for free as long as they are buying the scrap.

That's the deal I have on my roll off.

Or do what I do. Jack the sob up. Slide a trailer axle under it. Chain and binder it to the frame tight, very tight. Then drive slowly to the yard.

not to be rude, but Sacapyaherd how did you get into this 50/50 deal if all you've got is a new car to haul with? The owner can call a scrap yard to haul it off for him, why bother splitting it if you're not bringing anything to the table?

If you get any money from this, and i strongly mean IF, ALL money made should be used to buy a trailer, and a REAL truck that can be used to pull more than 4k.

Do that and the vets here wont be hollerin' at ya. If you dont plan on doing that, leave the job and let a REAL scrapper take care of it.
