wow, I got stung today. My local feeder yard dropped 30 to $120 GT since my last post, 3 weeks ago.
Lesson ... call your yards before you go !!!

Still holding at $75 a ton. Glad I had 8x's the $$ in e-waste/non ferrous.
Took 660lbs in.... $26.27.... ugh. Glad this is a hobby for me. That was not worth loading and unloading. At least not yesterday it wasn't.
I seen no one out yesterday. It was a bountiful day. Every vac, tv, fan, ect had cords still. I like when the locals stay home and eat cheeto's or what ever else they do.

$85/ton Denver scrap metal recycling. Glad I had more than 200 lbs of ferrous. I couldn't resist picking up some metal yesterday morning after seeing ONE ad that remained un-answered for almost an hour for what looked like a small pile of aluminum turns out it filled my truck bed - small amount of ferrous but mostly aluminum.
The guy was a plumber and threw in a 5 gallon bucket full of brass and copper, also threw in romex and other solid core copper wire - I still haven't sold the wire or stripped/sold the romex. That's what I got so far from making one stop.
Bangor Maine area: 5/14/19
#1 iron ppd 120.00/.060

#1 iron uppd 70.00/.035
#2 iron uppd 60.00/.030
Mixed/light iron 80.00/.040
At this point steel should only be a by-product of dismantling scrap
Sheet iron $90 net ton (.0475 lb.)
Clean sheet iron $125 net ton (.0625 lb.)
Prepared $130 net ton (.065 lb.)
I get what you're saying, but every Wednesday morning I drive right past the scrapyard on the way to my route, so it's basically a free trip anyway.
When my dryer quit I told it that it was going to the scrapyard if it wasn't a cheap fix. It's 20-something years old and I have another one at my MIL's house that I was going to Craigslist anyway.
Dryer is loaded up along with a found water heater & a microwave & computer shells for tomorrow.
I warned it! ;)
Shred still at 115/ton at the shredder yard.
Non shredder yard at 80/ton, down 25
Shredder yard at 105/ton, down 10
Here we go again.....
Wednesday I called the yard and was quoted low prices. I had a load so I hauled anyway. Yesterday the prices had dropped again.
#1 prep iron - $105/ton
# 1 unprep - $ 65/ton
Cars $ 35/ton
Appliances $ 10/ton
Non ferrous dropped as well but since I am stockpiling that I did not bother getting prices. In the ten years of scrapping this is the lowest prices I have seen.
Was quoted $65/Ton for Appliances/Shred today. For that price I will hold it. They also offered $0.05 for electric motors. Called another yard and they offered $0.14. Called third yard and they offered $0.13, but asked me what my sell price was. I told them $0.15 and she made it happen. Thought I had 300#-500# range, turned out I had 1140#. Nice surprise since I cant move my shred right now.
80 a ton@ western metals in Denver Monday+ my $10 bump blech. going into avoidance mode....
It has been a while since I posted one, but I got a ticket today. I passed a big pile of aluminum light lenses for the 2 x 2 and 2 x 4 drop ceiling lights. I also had some brass collected from garage sales and curbco and some from jobs. The only reason I went today was because my job for today cancelled. Oh well, money is money, and I got the job rescheduled for tomorrow. I was headed over to check if the woman was home and I passed a huge pile of debris. I thought I saw a faucet, and thought I needed to drive back by on the way home. Well, I went by and saw a couple sinks and some cast iron pipes and turned around to get the faucet. Ding! Ding! Ding! A cast iron sink, a SS sink, a bunch of 4" cast iron pipes, a hood fan, a DTV satellite dish still in the box. There was a copper vent pipe (yes, copper snap together venting pipe! 4 feet or so), a copper connection to the cast that was seated in lead to make the transition, a 4 x 4 sheet of SS, and a crapload of bed frames as well as some other fluff. Looks like I might be making another trip to the yard tomorrow.
Shredder yard now 90/ton, Down another 15
I haven't bothered to fire up my truck at least not to pickup any metal at these prices.
It's not worth it to me to pickup anything unless it's something on the street where I live, or things being disposed of at work. If I didn't live within 2 miles of a yard I wouldn't even collect on my own street.
I just hauled in a trailer load of iron (shred) in Houston. $0.03 a pound. 3,540 # = $106.20. That is the lowest I have seen since I have been hauling in scrap metal (started in 2006).
Sheet iron $.04 lb.
I have been having to charge to pick up any metal here lately
It did affect prices in the past.........When metal was at an all time high we would factor the value of the metal into the bid and possibly give a discount on trash based on volume of metal..........I don't really haul much straight trash anymore........I try to concentrate on metal only but at these prices I have to charge minimum of $25 to all residential customers just to cover gas and basic expenses...........We still remove all electronics for free and even pay a small fee if they have enough of something that we want..........Each individual call is different but the normal homeowner who calls needing to get rid of an old fridge gets charged every time now
$104/ton at the shredder yard in Sioux City
Shredder yard now 95/ton. 5/ton bump. i'll take it after my 4th day in a row of dumping just shred. busy busy busy
Down to $60 a ton Atlas Metal and Iron of Aurora.
Explains why today on curbs everywhere NOTHING is being picked up. I watched known scrappers drive by appliances and other metal on curbs nearby.
I have a regular that contacted me yesterday that's nearby. The ONLY reason I am recycling anything for them is to keep the rapport I have with them, my son might end up working there. They are less than a mile from the yard, I am off today - but even with that... only reason to do it is to keep a good relationship with them.
I did get quite a bit of metal from them 1600lbs so far - and I can pick up more, but long explanation short my first load/receipt of the day is the saddest one since I started part time recycling - but it made sense to go straight to the yard even with the truck not full..
Hauled loads in last Wednesday and Thursday to Sioux City and shred was steady at $104/ton. Hauled my non ferrous in Friday and overheard the counter gal on the phone. Shred is now $85/ton. $19 drop overnight
Still holding $60-65 a ton here. I was told it's supposed to go down even more.
Bums me out because with one of my "regulars" - I don't want to lose them - I hauled 6 loads in 4 hours Saturday averaged ~500 pounds each load - large items so couldn't make the loads more heavy and had to use my sawzall more than once, but my customer is 1.6 miles from the scrapyard. ~5600 lbs total all ferrous last week from them. I've been on a Keto diet for a while and have been lifting weights and lost a bunch of weight so I look at it as getting paid a little bit to workout - that way it doesn't bum me out as much.
The stove I picked up was sitting out by the trailer and I was getting a bit anxious to get it out of my yard. I went down to drop off some money into the banl and noticed a MWOTR alongside the road. I thought that maybe I would pick it up and add it to the stove... Ahh... Maybe I will, maybe I won't... Heading back to the house, they had added a washer. Okay, now I'm in. I head back and get the trailer and pick the micro and washer and throw the oven on. Not a huge load, but it was better than a kick in the a$$ (though, admittedly, not much)…
Shred hanging tough at 4 cents a pound here in DFW.
I just took in 720# along with 164# of leadacid batteries (22cents#) and took my bride to our favorite Chinese place for dinner.
Got enough left over for a case of beer.
Life is good.
Called the yard today. Still holding at $85/ton.
Shred at 100/ton, up from 80 at the non shredder yard.... called the shredder yard, still at 95/ton..... Booo shredder yard lol
$98/ton in Sioux City. Hauled 3,100 pounds in Monday. Hopefully prices keep going up
Sioux City dropped to $78/ton today. Was at $98.
Shredder yard up 15/ton. Now 110/ton
This week one shredder yard dropped price from $120 net ton to $100, other shredder yard dropped price from $120 net ton to $105.
No longer makes sense for me to pick up and haul in light iron. Not that much copper, brass and aluminum around so it looks like a scrapping hiatus for now.
I'll be looking to see how many scrappers keep driving around my hood on trash nights.
Shred down 20/ton
Shredder yard was 110, now 90/ton
Non shredder yard was 100, now 80/ton
