Price of gas has also tanked, transportation costs are down but yet shipping stays the same. And the cost to move the scrap from the yard is down.

It does to me in a way.
They could lower prices an listen to people ***** an moan when they go back up, or keep it the same an make money without all the *****ing an moaning. :)
We've seen gas prices dip before same with steel, copper, etc an it usually goes back up. So enjoy it while you can, but by the holidays or the new year at the longest you'll see gas go back up. Wish I could say the same for the metals.
It's easier to lower prices temporarily then it is to lower them for a long period an then try an go back to the higher rate as the normal rate.
I dunno, makes sense in my head!

Yeah lower prices suck but NOW is the Time to make money buying stuff right and sitting on it. I've bought several running, or needed under 100$ in parts to run, cars all for under 300$ ! Buy right and wait it'll pay off but don't spread yourself too thin either. Money is to be had in a down market as well as up. I have one car I paid 200$ for and sold the tires for 250$ and another I paid 250 for and sold 200$ worth of parts off it, the money is out there go get it. And oh yeah I drove both cars home !!
Well, the lower shred prices has finally hit my yard south of DFW. I took a load in two weeks ago and it was still sitting at 220 a ton, took in a load last Saturday and it was 160 a ton. Big drop. I will still continue picking it up and processing it, but I may start sitting on it until the price starts going back up. Will give me several flatbed trailer loads to take in by the time it goes back up and be a good payday.
Give it a while, less someone with less brains and more cash shows up, a week will change most peoples mind. I love getting turned down and then a week later, get a call and my "low ball" offer seems pretty reasonable. It's better to not buy much and buy right when you do buy.
I was warned NOT to sit on it because the price is still going down!
Time to sit on it is when the price bottoms out, then wait for it to come back up
If you sit on it now and then when the trailers are full and you have to bring it in >> might be down to $140 a ton
Just outside of Columbus, Ohio here. We are at $165 gross ton.
Yep...sadoff's mill sell price is almost 340 as of today (I texted an employee). I smell alot of funny business. Most yards around here feed sadoff and sadoff is always direct to mill. Local yards are all 135 nt.... I pretty much let it all pile up right now. Side note I paid to fill up the Gasoline storage tanks at my grandparents... 2.52/gal. 500 gallons. Going to wipe that out in three months or so...
160 nt at FPT Canton, Ohio yard as of 11-8-14. Moved in a steady downward slope from 205 nt mid May 2014. Know your expenses and buy accordingly. Personally I am trying to turn and burn as much material as I can get my hands on and handle as a one man show IF the margins work. Tater said it best.....there is money to be made up or down. Watch your buying to selling spread and keep making bank.
Low pricing tends to cull the lazy and wanabe's for a while. Time to get to work sewing up new relationships and thinking outside the box. Always one eye on the profit margin. And don't be afraid to cut the losers if it's not making sense anymore. Trading a hundy for a hundy back don't put any steak on the plate.
#2 insulated wire down to $.90 lb from $1.05 - $1.00 I hope this steel thing don't spread... They got to keep the granulators going don't they...?
Hobo-
Brass Dropped too for me from $1.50/lb to $1.25
ARRRRGH!

Love to get a semi and trailer to make it worth the haul. Even checked into loading metal on the rail line. Found one point to load out of, but need to do the math to figure expenses verses profit. Concerns with this strategy is density of the load and layover for the gondola car. Getting closer to an answer and will share with those interested.
mid michigan ranging from 150-185 ton
Around here there is always a truckdriver looking for a load to get him/her to maybe a better place for loads, especially if they own there own truck. They have to pay for fuel and maybe a payment. Sometimes you can get a discounted rate to get them to a better place.
I second that, I've used USHIP four times now for that exact reason, LTL going to a yard with a much better overall price. I didn't with aluminum this last time simply because a local was able to do better than the yard AND the ltl shipping cost. I've received LTL loads from forum members twice now, I really would suggest even calling a trucking company. Often a truck leaves with only 5 or 6 tons on the trailer with plenty of time to get it there, or is on the empty return trip where your going.
I am suggesting uship to larger lot customers of mine now if they are out of my pickup range. I've even had people use parcel carriers on trains and picked it up from depots. (8 or ten foot shipping containers)
The last I knew Greyhound was still doing that also. HomeQuote:

Greyhound is right around 1 to 1.50 per lb, yes they do it...if you needed something to arrive slower than next day air for more money spent...
Prices are down here not surprisingly. The lowest paying yard is at .0475 cents a Lb for shred. Highest just dropped down another half cent to .07 a Lb. I'm just going to keep turning and burning the tin and shred and hoarding the non-ferrous.
Shred down to 0.0775 pound here. Glad I cashed in on brass a few weeks ago 1.75# down to 1.60#. Aluminum stayed the same.
$110 net ton now
Uship...hope you making sure their insured an running legit numbers, an not some fly by night dude running cheap loads.
Lest here out east, most Ushippers lack the stuff a legit CDL driver has. An are causing issues for the CDL holders, from lowering rates big time, to straight out running illegal where the CDL boys have rules an regulations to follow.
I'm no longer a fan of Uship an it's drivers after research an talking with folks in the trucking industry.
Works for you great, I just hope their all legit, cause a good number aren't.
Me..I'll take Patriot's info, an keep it saved for a rainy day, right next to Gorven's contact info for when I need a truck load moved.
UShip...you can thank for Shipping Wars also. lol.

These low prices are killing my gas $. Down to .075/lb here for shred. I use that $ for my gas tank and now it's getting harder and harder to keep gas in it!
I took in 400 pounds of bulky, hard to clean / upgrade steel today. Fake Christmas tree, wicker wrapped chairs, fireplace front with some glass and screen, some small water tank things, etc. the worst of the shred! LOL Now I have $22 in my pocket and some room to keep the better stuff...
Getting bad here, last haul was at $85/ton. Lame.
Getting $195 a ton here :D
Still dropping here... $0.05/lb
$110/ton as of Monday. Took some brass in today. Said it was $1.35. Got them to bump it to 1.40. Eh, the extra paid for lunch so that works.
