Limited print runs are the most desirable , this note was printed in tx. With a print run of 640,000 . Condition and age also matter , but it's another thing to keep you eyes peeled for . I got this one at face value when I sold my car last week . Best coin I ever found was 1914 d penny . Glad I'm not the only coin weirdo on the forum .
I was going to point out the 1996 CAN penny thing. Though we've stopped making/using them up here, so it's a lot harder to find them now.

Logansryche, how can you take legal tender to a smelter legally? We've stopped using pennies but we still can't destroy them, they have to be spent or turned into the bank at face value.
We don't have that law here in the states, but most build backyard foundry's and smelt em themselves. A few years ago a California based organization started stamping a couple of dollar bills and started a "Where's George" campaign. Our government backed up the program even though it's illegal to deface a bill. Coins don't seem to matter that much.

Big Burt- Thanks for the different web site. I'll check it out. Looks like a neat reference!'m sort of like you when it comes to proof sets and such. Buying one of those seems more like a business deal than the thrill of the hunt of "finding" something (the "trill of the hunt" is probably the thing that links together most of my hobbies). I guess finding a proof set or such and getting a really, really good deal on it would be similar to the "thrill" of finding something. We'll see if that's true this year if I go more active in looking for silver coins than just roll busting and change looking.
Sounds like you had a lot of fun back in your earlier days finding silver coins in the change as a cashier. I remember working at a locally owned fast food place when I was in high school and going through the change with the girls in front one evening when the Hunt brothers were trying to corner the silver market (it was in the news at the time). We never found any 1964 or earlier quarters and dimes and only had a few halves and maybe an Ike or two. Other people were already going through change a head of us I guess with silver going crazy. I think with each big spike in silver (wasn't the last one a few years back when it almost reached $50 an ounce as well), any US coin with silver content gets picked off if seen and added to the various hordes and collections in people's houses. Now some people are even stashing pre-1982 US pennies and current nickels in the hopes that someday the copper (even though its currently illegal to melt pennies down) will be worth multi times more than the face value. We'll see...

I think about like this. If people are pulled from youtube for copyright infringement and not for coin smelting, it says something. You know how many videos are on there for coin smelting? At least 10,000+. Good luck shutting down and arresting all of em.Quote:

I've been putting my pre-1982 pennies off to the side for the past 6 months or so just for giggles. I'm surprised how few a person actually finds in change. Almost no pre-1960s so I don't know if most of the wheats have been picked off or what. So basically what I find is from 1961 through 1981 (I know some 1982 pennies were still 95% Cu put I just don't try figuring them out). So out a couple hundred pennies when we empty our change to put in the kids higher ed stash about every 6 weeks or so, I find about 3-4 dozen tops of pre-1982 pennies. Maybe there's more people hording pennies then we think???
P.S. I pick off the older CAN pennies as well for my "stash" when I find them :))
The one article I quoted a few posts ago shows one person that hoards em and I think I'll be doing the same. I'm also paying closer attention to the Canadian dimes I come in contact with.Quote:

I wouldn't set my personal president on anything I see on YouTube . There is a lot of misinformation and people doing unethical / irresponsible things on you tube . I'm confused that you say there is no law , then post a link that says in the first 3 words . ( if laws change ) . Hoarding is fine but I wouldn't be smelting those coins just yet .
If it was legal you would not have to melt them . I'm talking U.S. currency of course .
I'm taking a old piano apart this week, I wanted the wood for a cabinet project (will do in my spare time?). Any way this old upright piano must have been in a bar for awhile. I'm finding lots of old coins in it. I figure some intoxicated patrons missed the "tip jar", because I only have it half way apart and I have filled a coffee cup with change already. The newest coin is a 1977 Eisenhower one dollar coin. Several silver quarters, dimes and one us war nickel. A whole bunch of "Wheaties" pennies, obvious from the days when a penny was worth something. Reminds me of my checking grocery days. This piano was made in 1887 and was in "train wreck condition" so no way it could be salvaged. The wood is old black walnut, the grains are tight don't see wood like this anymore. Just a little bit of brass though, mostly steel and cast iron.
This is true but many are smelting them down to ingots and bars to take advantage of scrap pricing. I personally am going to start hoarding them and when I have enough smelt them down to bars for scrap.Quote:

I've been collecting coins for a long time but I usually collect the ones that have different images on the "tails" side of the coin. I do have some pennies and nickels from as early as 1924 I think it was, and a Canadian half penny.
My grandmother has a coin where the Queen's bra strap is showing on the coin. Figured those were pulled pretty quick! (I think it was a coin, maybe a one dollar bill)
