In the mid 80's the Honda Ascot was a smaller bike 500ish cc that was still a kick in the pants to ride. It came in a V twin and a regular twin and I still see them on CList for 1000-1500 ever once and a while. Yamaha's Virago also came in a 535 cc V twin version.
