As for Lowe's, it grew out of a smaller home improvement store, again I don't remember the name. I cannot say for sure, but I doubt its origins had anything to do with the original HD three, as that was not the store it grew out of...
Still, I enjoyed your story and I do share your preference for Lowes. Of course, they have been going downhill (less inventory and worse service) in the past 6 or 7 years too...
