Egads!!
Now I remember why I like to live in Canada!!
Put up with 18 feet of snow and snowshoes just so them bugs you guys are talking about don't drag me into the woods!
The biggest bugs I am familiar with are the flying grasshoppers--maybe 2" long and harmless. And the VERY occasional "junebug" beetle--maybe 2" max.
We had black widows where I was growing up--pretty hot and dry area, but the biggest girls of those I saw were maybe less than 1/2" across at the bum.
Our black flies and skeeters are pretty small, but they make up for it in numbers...but generally they won't kill you!!
One thing that is hilarious is the "bot flies" that lay eggs on our horses fur, which eventually means having to worm them. They fly very slowly and are large enough that they can be seen, buzzing around like a pregnant blimp. The horses don't like them and will run away from these critters. It is quite funny to watch--an 1100 lb animal galloping around to avoid a single buzzing bug!
Jon.
PS--I think there is an older post on SMF where a guy (maybe talking about his buddy) was working under some sort of stainless food table and felt bugs crawling on him--when he got back out he found he was amongst a shztload of black widows!! eep!
