From the H.P. web site dated Fri., March 16, 2012 :
    Deskjet 1000
    Price and buy
    Deskjet 1000 price $29.99
    What's in the box?
    • Printer
    • Power supply
    • Power cord
    • HP 61 black cartridge (approx. 190 pages)
    • HP 61 tri-color cartridge (approx. 165 pages)
    • Reusable tote
    • CD with software
    • Set-up guide

Now if one clicks on the "cartridges" link they get this:
    HP 61 black 190 pages $13.99
    HP 61 tricolor 165 pages $19.99

Looks pretty close to the same amount of pages per ink cartridge to me.

Printing in black: about 7.5 cents per page
Color: about 12 cents per page

    + paper and power

If you read the fine print it will say something like "at 5% coverage"

So if it was 5%, then a full page color picture would cost around $2.42!
