However, I do not recommend that anyone disassemble one of these. should probably be classified as hazardous due to the asbestos that was sandwiched between the AL and SS bottom plate.

Are you sure it was asbestos? Asbestos would act as a very effective insulator. I think you would want maximum heat transfer to the bottom plate.
