Out of all the metals, silver is my personal favorite. But even though I like silver the most, and have silver bars and shot, for end of the world type stuff I have junk silver coins. The reason for this is because their values are well known, and the currency is recognized all over the world.

I know this was true in the past, I have no idea if it is still true today. US Fighter Pilots used to if they do not still do, carry British Gold Sovereigns or "Kings". The reason was because they were known all over the world, a recognized currency.

Why bother with copper rounds when there is so much copper coinage, US and otherwise, readily available for purchase. People all over the world know what American coins look like, just like everyone in the world, used to know what a British gold Sovereign was worth.

At the heart of science is an essential balance between two seemingly contradictory attitudes--an openness to new ideas, no matter how bizarre or counterintuitive they may be, and the most ruthless skeptical scrutiny of all ideas, old and new. This is how deep truths are winnowed from deep nonsense. -- Carl Sagan
