Actually if your parting out cars properly you should make several thousand above your costs and cover your costs with the scrap metal, cats and wheels/tires. I am averaging 30 hours for complete teardowns right now. Just got another blazer torn down, sold the body w/title for $300, the wheels and tires for $400 and the front clip for $500 tranny for $300 rear axle $250 front axle $150, havent put the the rest of the parts on ebay yet as im still running the shop tearing down several more cars.

thats what we are trying to start doing now, we are losing some of our fast cash but i think the long term results for the bottom line is for the best

I usually only do about 4 cars a year, but work was so slow this year i was able to get 6 done. Ive changed my method for tear downs where i dont get everything off but it dont waste 10 more hours for another $300 in parts. I also have more/better tools now and that has helped alot also. I am selling some parts salvage style thru craigslist. Whatever dosent move that route goes on ebay. The bottom line is that increasing volume and decreasing costs are the best ways to increase profit.

up until recently we just took the battery, radiator, alternator and cat and aluminum wheels if they were there, the fast flip. we are set up with rascore now getting ready to send in our first tote. we have pulled a few motors the last couple weeks and have never done that, just crushed them till this point, anyway live and learn

what are they offering for used motors and transmissions if you dont mind me asking? i did some research on that deal and sent in an application for membership there, i still havnt heard back on it, they probably dont care about the small frys like me that only do 10 cars a year though

couple of years ago a famous national tire/muffler chain was caught taking of old cats and putting on after markets, never heard what happned to them legal wise.

Some other ways to recognize an aftermarket cat besides the welds:

They might be marked with flow, top, catco or an arrow. Car companies know which way the cat should go on, they don't need markings.

The majority of aftermarkets I come across also have a lot shinier heat shield.

actually they do care, their sheets they dont buy motors or transmissions, what they do take is air sensors, window motors, calipers, wiper motors, steering racks, computers. i have still not sent anything in but ive got a few computers at 60 to 70 and steering gear racks for 60 to 70, keep in mind they dont buy all of them and some they dont pay enough to go thru the trouble, its easy to use you can go through the make and model or you can type in the vin(this option gives you your cars weight) alot of the calipers go for 8 bucks a piece(tho some are only 1) just depends on the car. i pulled a rear wiper motor today $20 took about 5minutes
