Dont wait till Monday. You really worried about it, then go for option 1. Hook up right now. Go straight to the state police. Have a state police look it over. Just tell them you think you purchased stolen equipment and need it looked at it right now. Nothing difficult about that.

Next time do the research before you do the deal. All these questions you are asking can be answered by your local authorities.

I like to read most the stuff that comes through the forum but this is the second thread this morning that's got me feeling like it's Monday not Saturday.

Check that...forgot about factory guy that wants advice but won't listen, so that's three. Maybe I just woke up on the wrong side this am.

That's the point where the kid in me goes into name calling mode, while the grown up in me reminds you that at no point did I suggest tampering with any VIN. I gather if there were a VIN on it, you would not be seeking advice. Your local DMV has all the answers you need. Good luck.

I don't know what state you are in but only they can help you!

Here in Florida all you need for title of a trailer is a paper with the weight from any certified scale house.
With that paper and about $35.00 you just go to tax office and get tag and title no questions asked.

But every state has there own rules so just call and ask questions.

Up here you can stamp any random # into the frame and take that in as a homebuilt. My ex son-in-law used to build trailers in his garage. We used the spec's off of factory built and built our own, put our own # on them, they don't have to look homebuilt to be one, as long as safety wise they are legal.

    Yay...i found the vin#

So with some guidance from you guys I located the VIN stamped inside the tongue. Now I feel a little better. I need to have an officer VIN it and I now have to file for a lost title. How long does it take to get one?

Depends on the state. In Colorado they can print on the spot in most cases but you will need to find the owner to sign. Some states are very forgiving with trailers...Save some time and call DMV.

Yeah that is probably a secondary VIN. A local trailer builder puts a VIN tag on, then also welds the VIN in several areas on the trailer.

I think things just got complicated!
You found a VIN, What if it comes up stolen? Do they arrest you? Take the trailer! Do they charge you with excepting stolen goods?
What kind of receipt do you have? This "trade" seems to have put you behind the eight ball.

For about $5 buck you can do a VIN search in CO, might want to check if that's an option.

    You're over-complicating things.

First, call local law enforcement and ask them to run a stolen check on the vin.

Second, what does your state actually require - a certificate of origin (kinda like a title but not recorded with the state, just passed on from owner to owner), an actual title, or a weight slip?

Your BMV should be able to walk you through the details. You have a bill of sale and a vin number. That's a good start. Would be better if your bill of sale was notarized and included the vin though. Something to think about next time.

What state are you from, sorry if I missed it in one of your previous posts.

You can haul it to the DMV but if they cannot find the vin number either then the trailer will be nothing but scrap. Sounds like your worried about the laws, which is not a bad thing I might add. But if you drive it to the DMV you are breaking the law just by having it on the road. I doubt very much it was stolen, if it has been "traded" as many times as you claim, the original owner more than likely lost the title, or the person that they traded it to didn't need a title for some reason or another. And as for the vin plate not being there, if the trailer was rusted, it probably rusted off, I had one that was only holding on by one rivet when I noticed it. I would just go or call the DMV and see what your options are, you may be surprised.

As long as you have a bill of sale, then by all rights its your trailer, it is the responsibility of the person you got it from to prove they got it legally. Keep that bill of sale and hopefully your state will allow you to get a title with it. If by chance they will not title the trailer with a bill of sale, ask them about homemade titles, they are easy to obtain in some states, others not so much.

I see no reason to leave the trailer at the DMV if you cannot find the vin or cannot get it titled. Like I said, if you have the BOS then you can legally scrap it if you see fit. Why loose out on some money, and you can always sell the axles to recoup some of your lost money.

I live in PA, and my laws are kinda strict when it comes to titles and such, if you don't have a title for something your pretty much out of luck.

    Good luck.

LOL. When I replied to this thread I didn't realize there were 2 pages of replies. Oh well I know what I would do with this trailer, but the owner needs to make his own decision.

It does seem kind of funny though that you found a VIN # that would seem in a inconspicuous place. Usually when the Police Pull you over they wouldn't go crawing around on the ground to look for a VIN #. I guess that could be a second place they put it.

While doing a little more research, I have discovered that all trailers, RV's / Campers manufactured in the USA From 1978 -to- current date have a minumum of (3) locations where the VIN number is permanently stamped into frames and/or components and the three min. does not include any placard, sign, sticker that may be affixed by rivot, welding, screwed or bolted onto the frame or components.

I'm nott sure if I worded that properly, so to clarify it better, if you find a small metal placard with the VIN, there will always still be at min.of three more locations that the VIN is stamped or lazered into the frame or components that are permanently affixed to the frame.

SPECIAL NOTE: When I wrote Reply No. 33 I realized that it may of seemed rather harsh, and so be it, I stand firm on my personal & professional ethics and morals. I sincerely hope the trailer issue is properly resolved.

    Magically Found It?

I didn't Magically find anything. I was looking for the standard VIN tag. I came to the forum and posed the question of if or maybe where could I find the other VINS.

So this tread has become a knock down-drag out. It's been all over the place from being advised to "grind" the VIN off -to- cutting it up and scrapping it -to- leaving it in an unknown location so he could retrive and use it.

Well guys I'm an honest person and I will do the right thing no-matter if I lose my investment or not. Lets try do be more supportive of each other. Some members of the forum have formed a hierarchy and slam people who asks stupid or un-informed questions. Well people ask questions when the don't have the answers. It's the same (say) 5 forum members that over analyze everybodies posts and look for flaws and go into attack mode.

I WILL DO THE RIGHT THING WITH THE TRAILER!!!

Mick would you please close the thread?

When you get it resolved, let us know how it went/what steps were involved. Might help someone else out in the future.

    Best of luck.

if it was during the week I'd already have the answers to my questions. Our state offices are on the 4 day work week-CLOSED FRIDAYS. I did call the local city police today to come check the VIN. They told me I needed to have the Highway Patrol(STATE POLICE) come check the VIN. However, when I called them they said that I would have to bring it to their offices on Monday to have it checked and scaled. Well it doesn't have any plates on it. They told me I could go pay $6 at the DMV and get a temp tag so I could bring it in to have it checked. The Trooper I talked to on the phone said that if I was going to the DMV for a temp tag that they could inspect it their as well. Called a friend and he said that the State Tax Commission handled issues about titles. So monday I will run to the DMV get a temp tag, run home hook the trailer, drag it to the DMV and have it checked and if all good register it then. The Trooper also told me that state law requires a tandem axel be reistered no matter what. If you fail to renew it it will be revolked. That after 3 years of not being registerd the DMV is not required to contact last know owner and that the DMV can reassign new title on the spot with a bill of sale. Well the trailer probably hasn't been registerd in many years and it was beat to hell and rusty when I got it. So before I did all of the above I went out and looked really good for the VIN. I found it this time as I now knew where I should start looking thanx to the helpful forum members. I also seen that the DOT date on the 3 of the four tires were from 1993. I know MrDoGOOD will probably at this point say "tires don't last that long-you must be lieing". So I would say the trailer was traded many many times but sat most of it. It was a victim of the weather. It is way possible that the title was simply lost along the way. The trailer is probably 20 years old. I am less worried about the trailer now and eager to get it back on the road for the first time in years!
