brass casing

Just wondering if anyone has tried to recycle old ammo brass. Saw an auction for about 16k lbs of brass for auction. I know all yards are different and Ill need to contact the yards in the area. Just wondering if its worth the effort. Oh and it does not need mutilation. Which is a good but somewhat fun thing to do. Thanks in advance.

Yes the 8 ton compared to 25 pnds. opens eyes and wallets most yards would be happy to deal with you.

Up here, the govt. surplus auctions on old ammo brass usually go for well over scrap brass price, for selling to reloaders. (at least, I'm guessing that's why it sells so high) That's something to consider yourself, if you win the auction. Or maybe something even to consider as you're bidding the auction.

Lots of small to medium businesses selling surplus "once fired" military brass. Certified police range brass is another popular item for these guys. Must be a pretty big market because there are a lot of them doing it. As to scrap value, I just wait until I can't reload em anymore and then throw them into the scrap pile. So yes, it is more valuable for reloading than as as scrap (at least to me).

Most companys that will take casings charge about a dime per lb to go thru them to make sure they arent full casings.

I've been watching some of these auctions as well and was wondering if someone has any experience with this.

My biggest concern was that some require "Mutilation" with a DOD or US Gov witness.
Was wondering if anyone had any experience in this.

I buy them as clean yellow brass (paying $2.17 lb. for 1000+ lbs.). By any chance is the 16K lbs. located in Ft. Carson? If so, we might be bidding against each other.

Lol. Nope. I'm out in New Mexico. Mostly do escrap but things have been getting slow so diving into more Ferrous/non Ferrous stuff. Ill be happy if I can score just one of the surplus auctions.
