I do this and it's been working for the most part. It's pretty competitive out here, so I throw out a "commission" to the owner or supervisor and they're much more bought in after that. Just scored two construction sites this way.

Surprisingly enough, I have never been asked for money yet.

I tell everyone that I do own a company, but I am the only worker for it as well. Sometimes, I am asked if I make enough money doing it. I tell them that it pays my bills, and puts food on the table for my wife, kids, and I, so that is all that matters to me.

Also, regardless of the client, I also sometimes throw out the fact that I own a small investment firm as well, and sometimes I am lucky to catch a few new clients for that as well.
