Never really got into scrapping before, looking to get into it? any tips?

I never really scrapped too much before, I just scrapped filing cabinets, and oil tanks once in a while, a few stoves, one time me and a few buddies pulled a 30's ford car out of the deep woods for scrap and thats about it, but I'm looking to make a few bucks on the side and get into scrapping since I live in the country and there's always metal laying around. I'm going to look at a 4x8 trailer tomorrow with a drop down rear gate, ONLY 200 BUCKS, for some extra scrap space. But where do you guys find all your scrap? I see a lot of stuff free on craigslist like old broken fridges, oil tanks, scrap metal, and what not... Where do you guys find most of your stuff?

Hey PS, Welcome to SMF. Everybody probably has their places, but it isn't always what worked for me will work for you(although many times as well it might). Best just get out and start lookin, ask around, get your name out there, even if it's just written on a page with a magic marker and has tear off numbers. Get an ad of some sort on craigslist, some guys even post on their facebook(fb also has those community swap shops/yard sales etc) And as they've already said, read the forums looking for ideas, soon enough you'll be dropping some of your own. welcome, I think you and cummins will get along well haha you will learn like I did it is better to look first then ask a question since most of the time it has been answered and maybe it will make your question more specific

Cummins was going to be my first choice but was taken, so i chose powerstroke even though i use a cummins for pulling aha

cummins is strictly dodge haha he doesn't like other brands, I personally don't mind as long as it gets the job done

I love my cummins to death, but to get the engine, I have to get the frame which is the dodge, this dam thing is always breaking, had to get the front end rebuilt just about every year, everything just falls apart on that, but again its a 2001 so i should know better, my neighbor has a new dodge cummins, white, dually, lariat package, fully loaded, the thing is like my dream truck and he has had no problems ever with the truck, except his kid who is like 4 took a rock and scraped off the paint on the door.... I think personally though, the cummins is the best engine out there, followed by the powerstroke 7.3, but for the better brand, i definetely think ford makes a better chassis

Here is my 2 pennies..
Yes read but get out there and look, place ads, talk to people.
In some areas there are lots of scrappers.
Many are chicken hawks which works but I prefer talking to people in addition to that.
Almost every pick up has something else or knows someone else.
I dont have cards yet, no site, and no ads up yet just made a few calls and spoke to people and I am moving along.

Bottom Line: Its easy to read and get stuck on what to do next, be like mike "just do it".

I live out in a rural area also, Craiglist doesnt help me any everything is normally 80 miles away. Word of mouth gets me most of my stuff, people at work and around the community know i been at it for a while. and curb shopping Im normally in my truck so if i see something on the curb i can stop and ask, and load it up. I hit the rent to own place once in a while when i see there discards piling up, there happy to get rid of it.I find quite a bit of stuff has fell off on the side of the highway,scored some metal roofing and gutters this week, had a trail went for 8 miles or so. Must have been the same guy lost it the color all matched.

Just kidding. Aside from all the tips everyone else has, id suggest getting some basic tools. Hammer, screwdrivers, I like my $30 Mastercrap wrenches, and I find a GOOD knife helps a lot.
Iv spent probably 2000 on the Snap On truck in the past 2 years, and find I use maybe 1/4 of all the tools I have for scrapping. So don't go nuts on tools right at the start.
All depends on what you plan on scrapping too. I do cars mostly, for now... And that sometimes requires some special tools. The blue wrench is my personal favorite. But if you are into curb shopping, maybe just a hammer and a solid knife, or if you want to get into e waste, look at a set of smaller screwdrivers. And a hammer for those tricky screws....

Be creative, think outside the box. Whats going to separate you, from Jim Bob ripping around in his chevy snooping around for curbside BBQ's?
There are some really smart guys on here, read up on a bunch of threads and you'll do well. Everyone's pretty friendly for the most part. If you have any specific questions, use the search box to search the forum first, you'll often answer your own questions 10 times faster than by posting. And it keeps everyone happy.

Hey man, whatever makes life easier.

Cummins dont break down as often (Trust me, We see the same duramax at our shop all the time, and the 6.0L powerjoke. DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED.)

Mastercrap is cheap, especially when CT has those crazy 80% off sales. and lifetime warranty on top, who doesnt love that right?

and a hammer, no explanation needed.
