This is why i use a sludge to smash all that so i can get to the goodies. screwdrivers and sockets are for the inefficient

1- You have no specific idea about how i handle components containing crts. I separate all my materials in a garage, which is swept after every load. I don't bang them out right on the street. I used to use screwdrivers until i figured it would be faster to sort it back at my house. which it is.

2- I am a curbside scrapper. I NEVER leave scrap behind. I will always make it fit, or call another truck. I have been scrapping for 2 years almost DAILY and I've never had anything fall off. That load was very secure, and it had more than one bungee cord, it had about 5 and they interconnect the scrap together. I've also gotten rid of that van-trailer setup months ago and replaced with a f150, along with 2 diesel f250s. I have straps, but bungees work good for lighter weight scrap.

This picture (which looks to have come from my facebook page) was taken this last spring. The town I live in has an annual spring clean-up and that's why the "Pick-up metal" looks so sketchy cuz i did it in a hurry. I made over a grand in 3 days. could've made more if there weren't 100 trucks crawling through my town.

I don't know how you guys scrap in texas, but in the chicago area, we stack it high.

i do about 50 tvs a week. that's nearly an hour. Once again, this is done in my garage. All the glass and plastic is contained, swept up and thrown away. I don't see how you can say there is a "right" way of taking apart a tv when we both end up with the copper yolk, board, and wires separated.

I love the hustle. I have deep respect for anyone who gets up every morning and works hard for their family. My biggest long term concern is the eventual consequences from the scrapers who take short cuts.

It’s easy to toss hazardous waste in the trash
It’s easy to snip ac lines and release the Freon
It’s easy to burn insulated wire
It’s easy to bust crt glass and throw it in the trash or bury it

Because of this, it will eventually become easy for environmental lobby groups to persuade laws where scrap yards can no longer buy from the public, buy certain materials without certificates, etc. A lot of us on this forum may one day be saying, “well, at least we had a good run”. Maybe [hopefully] I’m over exaggerating

Don't get me wrong, I understand where you guys are coming from, btw i don't snip freon lines, I have a buddy i take all my fridges&a/c units to and he takes it out for free (i think he sells the freon or something? idk) I snipped lines a few times because thats what the scrap yard guys told me to do, i didn't know it was illegal until i researched it a few weeks later. i also think you guys are a bit confused. I take a sledgehammer (i spelled "sludge" in my last post(s) my bad) and break the plastic shell in the back where each screw is so i don't have to unscrew it, that's all. I don't smash the lead glass (the brown/purple tinted glass) I've known what that stuff is for a while. I do give the cathode ray tube itself a little tap and that breaks the vacuum so i can get the yolk off.

I throw out the remnants because it's legal here, as long as all the electronic components are removed, it can go in the trash. I'd love to take it somewhere else, but everywhere that takes them requires that they are 100% intact (nothing taken out of it)

2 screws, and pull off the clamps, then yank out the three little sticky-foam wedges with your needlenose, and the yokes twist-pull right off. The vacuum in the tube has absolutely nothing to do with wolding the yoke in place. I've only been at this scrappin' thing for 2 months and I learned this 7 weeks ago.

""A little tap"" on the tube to break the vacuum will make it implode. You're #$%&ing up your shop, your neighborhood, AND your body.

yeah I don't smash the glass, there is no point to it, since there's no scrap inside the glass. I didn't think people would be jumping to conclusions and formulating opinions as fast as they did. But whatever i don't care.

Pick-ups are the only types of scrap trucks i ever see on the road. I started out at 16 with a minivan and a trailer, and now i'm 18 and i've got a f150, and access to 2 f250s if i fill up the first truck. I work as a landscaper, but scrap metal gives me some serious cash to spend on whatever. And that's nice.

Auminer-I think what he is doing is tapping the top of the neck to release the vacuum so if something does drop on the actual tube it won't exploded...breaking the seal on top won't make the tube implode it only releases the vacuum and let's air into the tube slowly. I only do this if the cone is stuck on the tube with a lot of glue or whatever is used to hold the cone on. It's actually safer to do this before taking off any cone just to be totally safe.

OIC... . I don't do it, at least not intentionally. I try to get what I'm after fast & carefully and button the TV back up ASAP. I did snap a neck accidentally when I was torquing on a stubborn cone. THAT was a scary moment! Pulling out the sticky-foam wedges really helps with that.
