The only stars that don't work with flat heads are the ones with the pretruding piece in the center of the star.
I tried that tip with the small phillips screws. Worked like a charm the first time. The second time the blade tip broke. I seldom, if ever, have a problem with the star bits though. It's the dinky phillips screws that give me a hard time.
