I do like your idea, of checking ebay, getting a price idea, and then hitting craigslist first.

I'll use ebay completed then google will sometimes come up with sale items also on other sites. Between the two or three I've got a good idea of a starting price.

I have used google to find out what some items are selling for as well. Although, unlike ebay, I just see what they are trying to sell it for.
