I always assumed they were a mix of metals and were zinc based.

Cast aluminum. Stainless would be heavy and limited use in residential. File test: aluminum is soft, stainless is hard.

the only think i found that was zinc on a faucet was the handles or single handle on one say for a kitchen sink and most bathtub handles are also zinc or die cast as they call it. sometimes at my yard they take it as ss wich is better for me cause its .05 for zinc and .30 for ss. most of them are brass never had a ss one just the sink part is ss. i would say brass maybe white brass? never seen it myself though.
