    Breaking the tube glass doesn't do anything since it's a vacuum of air. You'll hear a big whoosh of air for a few seconds, then it's done. I usually cut all wires before removing the circuit board at the spearhead of the tube.

    Also I've been told if you press the power button on/off a couple times, will release any electrical charge that may be still stored inside.

    The tube glass is actually full of some sort of gas, thats harmful if inhaled. Thats why you dont break the glass, thats also why they are considered "hazardous waste".
