Scrapping without a truck??

I use a truck but i've seen many cars and mini vans scrapping.

I was at the yard last week and was inside the building by the scale and heard a car pull in, it sounded like ''RrrrrRRRuuuurrrrrRRUUuurrrr..''

What the heck is that? Look out the door and a Hyundai something or other was pulling in to unload. the yard guy told me he hauls over 1000 lbs at a tie in it of wheel weights and other car parts. said he used that car just for that. I'm not sure why the engine was doiing that funny noise sound thing but i can't imagine how much longer it would last!!

What I did:
Start by using my old man's truck. Use scrap money to buy scrap truck. Buy scrap truck for 350$. Keep using old man's truck and repair 350$ truck.
Now you have a scrapping truck.

Hey man

I've been there. Im in a 95 Saturn SL2. Smaller than your car. ha ha. I used to get discouraged but you make it work.
1. Buy yourself some GOOD tie down ratchet straps. If you can lift it onto your roof that do it. I convinced a manager at walmart yo let me take one of those giant metal cart corrals. It was broken so it. layed flat. It was as long as my car but hey 150lbs.
2. Learn how to break stuff down right away and make the most of your space.
3. I pick up ferrous all day. Although the worse part is when you see a nice big fridge and you wish your roof would hold it. But i just pick up the ferrous until i need to make room for non.
4. Remember those guys with those big trucks are paying way more than you for gas. Unless you have a full load but that's okay cause you want a full load.

you'd be surprised what you could haul.

I put a class 3 hitch on my 2005 subaru legacy. I towed my 15' bass boat around with it until I got my truck. It did fine on flat ground, and up to 65 mph. I had to be conscious of hills, never ran out of power, just had to manually downshift the automatic. I got a lot of comments (mostly compliments) on my setup, but wouldn't hesitate to do it again. Planning on getting a 05-07 outback 3.0 for the wife. I love those cars, easy to work on (if you know what you're doing).

I would be willing to bet you could get a class 2 hitch for your car/van/wagon/whatever and buy a small trailer (Harbor Freight, CL, etc) check HF first to be able to compare prices for utility trailers. There are always a ton of them up here by me. You shouldn't exceed your towing capacity towing anything but ferrous on a small utility trailer. You don't need to buy a truck, your mileage will drop though.

I scrapped for about 3 years with a 78 Datsun B-210 hatchback, I put 6"by6" blocks between the leaf springs and the frame so that I would not "bottom out", got rid of the hatch pistons so it could open way up, no seats except driver, a big "eye bolt" Through the passenger side floor and a 2"by10" ramp rode on the roof rack. I would use chains and a come along to get old V-8 engines inside with the "eye-bolt" as a dead man. Almost 40 mpg, best load ever 2100lbs. No tickets. What a money maker. Truck? we don't need no stinkin" Truck!!

I stuffed a full sized water heater in a Prius a few months ago. THAT was fun!

Some other impressive loads I've pulled off without a truck:

Most of those loads ranged from about 400-600 LBS.

Someone needs new a New SL2 seat....

Also get a roof rack.... I had a yakima roof rack on my 98 SW2..... (always have straps with me).... But when I knew I was out scraping and such, I would toss a pallet on top WORKED AMAZING for tying crap to and so forth (and did not damage the roof)... but if item is super heavy it went in hatch....

I've scraped outa Saturns for a long time.... normally with a seat or 2 missing to help fit more scrap in the car (right now I have no rear seats in my Vue because of this)

This is what I found out in Montana a while back.... had no idea where to take it out there:

Pulled out any Desktops (can scrap whole thing vrs CRT) and had the whole car full........

Brought this back to Indiana

Mech don't scrap the microwave turntable if there is one . worth more on ebay IMO

One thing I carry with me when I'm scrapping is a battery powered side head grinder with a zipcut disk in it. I scrap in a pickup, but it struck me as all of you that scrap out of a car might benefit with a zipcut to quickly trim awkward stuff down so it fits. I thought of it when I saw Gravitar's load with the chair just barely fitting in the back.

You can also use it to trim off little jewels like the brass safety valve on the hot water tank.

yep the glass turntables , they always sell on ebay. I always look for them at the yard I buy from, turntables and dishwasher racks

Ha! Someone needs a new sl2! That poor saturn is torn apart. Today i found another water heater. God i need a van. Come on tax returns!

While we are on the topic. My yard guy always gives me a paper and checks "bailng tin" which i assume is shred. But sometimes when i have a water he writes HWH on it which i also assume is hot water heater. Will that pay more. Should i bother remininding them i have a water heater?

Yes Ma'am! Well, pieces of one anyway. There was a full sized fake stainless BBQ in there also with the "wings" cut off.

I have a Honda civic (stickshift) with huge mileage on it from couriering that the seats fold down and open into the trunk. I put a hitch on it and pull a converted camper trailer into a reg trailer. It's pretty light. It's my truck for now. Just have to watch the weight.
