So I turned in a bunch of those heating elements at a sims metals a long time ago, I think I got ss price
then I stacked up a bunch more and took them to aaron metals and they said they could only pay steel price so I just took themback home with me
???

Thanks for the links i just picked up a pile of electric heaters from a re mod. I am assuming the outer case is aluminium and the magnetic wire running through the middle is ni-chrome although it is around 12 ga thickness.
Selling around here will be a long shot for sure.

mine are bought as steel also, something about the stuff inside them

iF you ever get one off a high temp one...like a lab or somewhere I assume...the really high temp ones have a platinum center...nothing consumer has this..so dont get excited...but keep the other in ki d if you happen across some weird higher end high twmp one from somwhere...

Well if they are going to give me dirty stainless price I am going to keep them intact. I told the guy I cut off all the steel and he said dirty cause the white powder in them.... And now that I know they have a dirty stainless priece any stainless that is marked but sticks to a magnet I will try and see if I get dirty stainless price for them...

I gave up with them.. Same yards and one day they are steel other days they are dirty Stainless. Now I just throw them in my shred steel pile and save myself the grief each time I go to the yard. Take my .10 to .12 and call it-- DONE
I'm so into scrapping.. When my Steel Toe Boots Wear out, I cut the Steel out of them and recycle the Toe!

they vary in quality and value. the out side tube is usually stainless. next is a ceramic like coating over a wire that is ni-chrome. really old ones were platinum wire.
factoid: back in the 19th and early 20th century lightning rods were made of solid platinum. one company alone sold over1200 in new england. sure wish I could get a copy of their invoices

They usually go for a higher price, based on recovery, if you have high quantity. Also depends on the yard you take it to, a lot of the old school yards keep that stuff separate and usually takes them a long time to get a Gaylord box of them. At my yard I don't waste my time with them they go in S/S brkg. or Alum Brkg. I don't have time to keep stuff like that separate if I wanna turn my inventory and make money

Ive been hanging on to them because of this forum, but my yard just keeps telling me it's steel... Haven't tried another yard yet.
