they vary in quality and value. the out side tube is usually stainless. next is a ceramic like coating over a wire that is ni-chrome. really old ones were platinum wire.
factoid: back in the 19th and early 20th century lightning rods were made of solid platinum. one company alone sold over1200 in new england. sure wish I could get a copy of their invoices
