Cast Iron Pedestal Sink

Someone gave me an enameled cast iron pedestal sink to take to the yard the other day. I've never taken iron in so I called and I was told it would get $165 a ton, which at that yard is the same as shred price. Is this typically correct? Shouldn't cast iron bring more than shred??

If it is in good condition I would be tying to sell it, if it is broken, cracked or otherwise junk, scrap it. I have got 2 cents a pound more for cast sinks and tubs than shred. I have also seen yards give the reason that since it is enameled then it goes as shred. But I bet you dollars to donuts that I winds up in the cast pile.

The enamel is chipped in places and would need to be refinished but the iron is sound. I have a consignment auction I could take it to. I have no idea what it would bring though, any thoughts?

Actually, the more I think about it, resale is the better option. Especially if it's a nice day and there's a good turn out at the auction. I've seen trash go for close to new prices. Thanks!

do you know what era the sink is from, 70's and newer scrap yard, older than that auction.

There is usually a production date cast somewhere on the underside of the sink...

I didn't see a production date, didn't look too old really, brought $90 at the auction, minus the 25% commission, so $67.50. Heck of a lot better than the $8-$9 I would have gotten at my yard.

excellent score, also be on the lookout for clawfoot tubs, they can go for a small fortuns just like some of the old cast iron radiators

Cast iron sinks and tubs always get the higher price of steel here. There are only two categories at my local light iron and heavy iron.

Just goes to show how much a nice day can influence the purchase price at an auction. If it would have been cold and rainy instead of 70 with a nice breeze it might have only brought $10
