    wouldn't removing the valves do the same thing ?

    Only if you enjoy chasing the valve from a partially filled tank once that last bit of thread from the valve is released from the tank head.

    Also the yard wants at lease a three inch diameter holes cut into the side of the tank.

    Yes it would, i just always seem to have a problem removing the vavles.
