Hi Everyone, Is there much you can recover from remote controls? Is there any gold in them?
If your talking a TV remote, not that I know of.
i got a gold spot on my thumb from using it :)
actually i was wondering that myself, from some older ones the other day
nope. but you can re-use the batteries in alarm clocks
There is usually one IC chip in them but other then that not much unless it is a gold finger print board tho rare
lol joe, now everyone will be tearing them down, looking for that one board
i've torn up a few, some have gold plated contacts, some dont. either way, i will scrap the board, but the grades vary severely from one to the next. scrap the planet.... no literally, the molten iron core of the earth is kinda heavy, lets scrap it!
I hit mine on the side with a hammer. Plasic splits, boards are 9 times outta 10 low grade. Won't go outta my way to get a remote. Alotta people that I get tvs from want to keep the remotes as backups.
lol i usually find them at the tv repair shops dumpsters and i grab what i can reach but yea most have low grade so i cut the one chip off and throw the rest in shred but now and then on higher grad tvs you will find the low grade with gold finger print which i sell on ebay and people pay bigger then i would for them lol but its free money to me
Lol - now you are got me wanting to check all the remotes I have. Got a bunch in a computer lot that I purchased (around 20). If think about it I'll take pictures and post what I find for those that are curious.
I just broke down about 50 a few days ago, all low grade and did not find one IC chip.
I just broke 2 apart how do i post pictures? love to show what i find and actually lucked out with a finger print board lol but no ic chip just a clump of black glue looking stuff
Thank you Mechanic i doubt i will bother with scraping that stuff away tho looks like extra work for the little chip lol
Hit them with a hammer and just toss in the low grade boards unless its one of the new computer remotes that control the whole house. Ive gotten 2 and both were high grade.
thanks Dunemaul I have yet to find any of them but will deff keep my eye open for them now may find some in the load i scored today hope it gets delivered soon lol
There may be silver on the board where the switch contacts are. Black/grey lines like the ones on PCB's.
I was given a whole garbage can full of remotes. I broke about 20 of them today, found 1 IC chip, no gold finger print, did find some that eesakiwi talked about. Are these still low grade, I just threw them in with the low grade boards.
even the gold finger print one is on the low-grade side.
Still working on the garbage can of remotes (I do these in my spare time) and found one that's 6"wide and 11" long. Bigest remote I've ever seen.
I have come across some nice tv remotes, really good board inside. If the remote has some weight to it chances are it's good, although a few "cheapies" have turned out nice.
finished braking down all those remotes that I had. All low grade boards, about 10 IC chips and a lot of plastic.
The remote controls I have disassembled yielded anywhere between five to ten screws, nearly always a low grade board, between two and four batteries, the rubbery sheet with the buttons, et cetera. You will not find anything really worth scrapping, although I do take them apart when things slow down. I like to keep the screws and batteries and toss them in their respective bins - you can never have too many spare parts running around your shop.
I forgot, theres a gold wire in the IR LED....
I found a $1 bill folded up inside a tv remote one time.. Don't know how or why it was there.
I've found that you can make more money reselling functioning tv remotes than you can scrapping them specially the remotes from higher quality televisions. some do have gold contact and some will have gold bonding around a single IC but most dont. Recently stumbled upon a hoard of several thousand remotes that I picked up from a former cable employee. I was reluctant to go get them at first but then he showed me a sample of the remotes he scrapped himself and next thing you know it I'm the new owner of the remote control hoard.
agree with above. I have a high end Denon receiver I bought that is pretty much useless without the remote. the remotes for them sell online for double what I paid for the receiver!!
Always check ebay for remotes im sure i posted this before but once sold a bose for over $50....also dvd recorder remotes sell well
I have a guy who buys them from me by the ream-paper box. All of them, even the crappy ones with battery crud, inside. He says it's like a treasure hunt.
Just picked up about 1500 remotes....yeesh. Looks like I've got some work to do
I have buckets full. Every time I get one I toss it in . Never got a around to cracking them open but it sounds like its not worth the time or effort. Anyone want a couple buckets of remotes- Free pick up in CT :)
Every one of the hundred or so I did in less than an hour had an IC chip but for two. A few were hidden under plastic so just tossed those into the low grade bucket. The really it only takes maybe 15 seconds to scrap one, 30 if it has screws. Another five or ten seconds down the road when I take all the IC chips out. Not worth much, true, but also takes very little time.
Some remotes operate TV's that they were not intended to operate.
Years ago I had paid NZ$100 for a egg shaped remote for my Sony 29inch CRT (State of the art @ the time...)
Later I found that a Sony remote for a different TV worked on it as well, it also brought up a whole bunch of different options on the screen inc serial # & country options.
You can do a similar thing with the programmable remotes if you try other codes in it.
very little gold but could be a bit of silver. Do you have some for sale?
As I know there isn't any gold
I know a guy that saves up his remotes and sells them in a lot of 50 on eBay. I have sold satellite TV remotes on eBay as well. 6 bucks a piece.
