CRT Disposal Solution

It seems like at least once a week somebody asks where they can get rid of CRT's and every time somebody answers with a solution but I don't think people read down the page to look for stuff. So here it is, the number one way to get rid of CRT's in my opinion is to bring them to Best Buy. Every location accepts them so unless you live a long ways from a Best Buy this is your best option. FYI- Some computers and electronic can also be traded in for gift cards if they still work and are in good condition....

So will they take just the tubes?

I'm not sure about that, but if not just put the case back on

AND also some Goodwill stores will take them if they look complete.

Something extra...plastics build up quick from other products. What to do with it? I add it to the tvs, then rescrew case back on, and bring to best buy. Tv with extra plastic.

heres what you do guys when your scrapping crt tvs and computer monitors your carefully take the back off keep the screws . clip all the wires etc. put plastic jacket back on and bring it to best buy

I emailed the regional goodwill and asked if they had a glass recycling program here for TV and monitor "picture tubes" The regional manager replied "yes they do". I never wrote him back to ask if there were any specifics, thought I'd just deal with the store from there ( i haven't taken any there yet though )

Also,

I don't know if it is true for all states but, in California, you may only bring in 3 electronic item per household per day. To check your individual state, scroll to the bottom of this page.

Though I have never had a problem, it is Best Buy's policy that they don't take disassembled televisions or monitors:

"What We Don't Take:

• Console TVs of any size, or tube TVs and monitors larger than 32". Use our haul-away or pickup programs for these items.
• Electronics containing refrigerants, such as mini refrigerators or air conditioners. Please contact your local waste disposal department.
• Appliances. Use our haul-away or pickup programs for refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, washers and dryers, ranges and microwaves.
• Disassembled TVs and Monitors"

I'm not sure how that stuff works in the US, but here in Ontario the government basically subsidizes places like good will to take that stuff. The money they get is based on a recoverable value being there (the stuff we take out). Seems to me loading them with plastic, or just taking the good stuff out is just shooting ourselves in the foot long term.

I have taken five a day into Goodwill for the last week. The manager by me said 5 at a time cause they are older women that work there. I unload them and they give you a donation receipt. No size or weight restrictions. In and out in 2 minutes. As stated on other posts they are shipped to Dell and Goodwill gets paid by the pound from Dell.

I disposed of one the fun way yesterday. I broke the tv down, took what I wanted, and then put it back together and set it out by the curb. It lasted all of 15 minutes before one of the local scrap vultures came by and grabbed it. I'm sure he was bummin' when he ripped it apart later and found out that it was already gutted.

That's why when finding crts on the street, we must check if cord is there. If its cut, check and see that the cord nub or cable plug is still intact.

Also, I figured I would put the extra plastic in with the tv, because I am sure they have an ABS recycling contact. I take out what I want, which they want also. So now they get a couple extra pounds of ABS. Win win. Hopefully my justification will not shoot me in the foot.

I find them all the time missing cords. A quick peek inside will tell you if the yoke is there or not. A quck kick to assure no bugs come out and in the car it goes.

Just be careful you don't leave one of those boomerang tvs out there...you know, the kind that come back smashed on the lawn.

If you live in the state of New York, I already posted a link in the non-metal recycling forum on where to take e-waste. I've been doing this for a few weeks now and have not run into any problems taking in gutted CRTs. Some places even take TVs.

here they just smash them on the lawn anyway, snatch what they want and leave the rest.

LOL, I did the same thing last week. It wasn't out for 15min and it was gone. Went out Mon night about 7 streets over from the house and seen 3 CRT's at 1 house all cleaned out when I looked in the back with a flash light. Wonder if he got mine.

Staples will also take monitors and other office type electronics, up to 6 pieces a day. No TV's but hey, thats what Best buy is for.

I was giving best buy tv shells and tubes. I have taken in about 50+ and now they are upset because I gut them and give them the rest. I thought the whole point of recycling was to: Recycle, reduced and reuse, not make profit, profit, profit! Does anyone know where I can find a recycling facility in Michigan that accepts just the shells and tubes? If I cant find any, the tubes will be at the curb!

Can you really blame Best Buy? You are taking out all ther parts they can make a little $$ and leaving them the hard part to dispose of.
Think about it Best Buy has to pack up all the monitors and ship them somewere. This is not really free.

I do blame best buy they need to take responsibility for selling hazardous materials, the garbage they sell is over priced anyway, I have never shopped there, but was considering it, until now! Luckily I found out that the goodwill locally takes the shells, tubes, and recycles them regardless of the condition, that's wonderful! Not only am I saving the environment by recycling I am making money on the side with the rest!

I callad my nearest GW, and the manager said "computer stuff only" as far as the Dell reconnect program was concerned,
and that they are stuck paying the recycle fee for any non working TVs and monitors. The Dell web site that GW directs to,
clearly states "any electronics, any condition" and lists the GW stores that participate in the program. According to the
manager at GW, this is clearly not the case as far as he is concerned.

The industry created a product that it clearly made billions on throughout the years from consumers, and the government. Now that
their product has been declared a hazardous waste, the end disposal costs of it has fallen into the laps of the consumer,
or the last one holding it, who as always gets screwed. It's no wonder there are so many TVs, and monitors being given away or left on streets, and making folks pay to get rid of them is not going to ensure they end up being disposed of responsibly.

The one located here in Midland, I actually got pretty heated over the whole ordeal, but luckily nothing went to curb! I have been successfully taking in CRT monitors, and TVs to goodwill since September.

Some where around 300 at least since then, most people throw them to the curb around here anyway, and most of them haven't been gutted, so I usually pick them up gut them and take them in. I guess there is a sorting facility in Flint which Dell Computers owns and is recycling them there. I really would like to research it more because I want to make sure this stuff isn't going to China or Africa to be broken down or just thrown in a land fill.

I guess I really don't trust recycling facilities when it comes to recycling since I have seen a lot of the video's on YouTube.

You are right there! Glad you did the research! I would let the manager know that they are wrong!!! But put it nicely :) Lol, and if they don't work with you then report them electronic companies should be reasonable for disposal or reuse, and I mean all of them not just Dell!

I don't even like Dells, but I am proud of them for stepping up and taking the initiative for recycling electronics, I wish HP would do the same thing I mean they make a lot of money off consumers, and I get more and more of their printers all the time :)

Dont let managers from local stores or goodwills try to bull**** you...these programs are done by dell and sometimes a coalition of other tech companies. Those guys pay for it and not goodwill or best buy......and do not kid yourself that they do it bevuase of the goodness of their hearts or concern for the environment....they get either a huge tax break OR it keeps the govt from hitting them with special fees or laws because they have products that require special recycling. They started these programs to keep teir asses out of the fire. So the next time someone *****es that they wont take a "STRIPPED" tv...tell yhem to refer to the program rules and they they have to take them as they get paid no matter.

**** we get paid .6 cent per pound for tv's here in sacramento ..... .8 cent if you take a list with you and get the customers address .... as of like last year its pretty much no limit on the amount you can bring in ... cases-old wooden tv's - shells ... they do not care

I did a print screen of what their add says on line and will print it out to show them. I also do the same thing with any CL adds just in case of hoax's and I end up having to explain myself to the police.
I am dropping off my TV carcasses at GW and Best Buy, they're on the way to my Drs. appointment this month, with the print out in hand. If they don't want to adhere to what it says, then they should be more specific.
I got nothing but time on my hands and I'll create a ruckus over this and the environmental hazard it poses, and how the last person holding it, is getting screwed.
I've already contacted my Attorney General regarding a HUGE discrepancy on my phone/ internet bills for the last 2 years, and won't hesitate to complain about this issue to who ever I need to as well.

Computer Equipment Recycling with Reconnect

Thanks for that link hobo. It pretty clearly states that accepting TVs is at the discretion of the local Goodwill or whoever their local partner is. Any "electronics" such as audio equipment may also be ineligible for the program, as the closest item listed is "appliances", which are again accepted at the discretion of the local partner. No mention is made of "gutted" monitors or TVs, so I'm thinking possibly Dell would/has/is taking the easy out on that issue as well, again by leaving it up to the discretion of the local partner.

Here's the problem with capitalism.. In order to pay their bills and employees, they need to make a buck to stay in business. No profit= no enterprise. That being said, I'll choose capitalism every time over socialism.
