Hard drive magnet....very strong but only on one side so easy to work with. I put it on the top of my steel toe boots and it follows with me all day (it will not slide off very easy with out it being pulled on)
introduce yourself........and this question was asked just last week......
I use all kinds. Mainly HD magnets. Have a few from microwaves.
Cool tip, easy. Here's one tip of mine. I leave a few magnets on the trailer fenders so I can hold a strap/hook in place long enough to go to the other side and cinch it up.

What's the deal here?
A lot of that kind of Deja Vu around here.
Ahh. I see it now. Highlight the OP. Hidden spam.
You're welcome. In the past I would use a rock or a heavy piece of wood/scrap and lay it over the strap on the fender which held it enough to go cinch it up. Or I would toss the buckle end over the load and the weight of it would sometimes hold the hook in place.
Light bulb went off later regarding using a magnet. Much easier/less frustrating. I use 2 magnets to hold the heavy trucker strap.
Idaho, are you using magnetron magnets?
I found a pair of these in a old 4gb scusi Hard Drive.

They are a mind blowing quarter inch thick
I use my HD Magnet as a tool rack. I find the right 3 hard drives to salvage and I will have enough to turn the whole shelf in to a tool rack.

I have been building a E-cycle work station in my garage. It is a work in progress I have to keep it mobile.

This Magnet was split down the middle so I have 4 wedge shaped magnets one of witch is holding up my hammer. I have it stuck in the bars of the cart so it can't slide off and stick to the hammer.
i prefer the HD magnet cos thats what the ppl at the scrapyard use
i want to be sure that they will take the metal i have as what i think it is.
i dont like to disappoint myself after lots of hard work & high hopes of earning a good amount at the yard
better to be sure
The material that we receive is so varied and mixed good magnets are really important to us. Hard drive magnets, as mechanic said, are too strong. they attract 300 series stainless steel varieties that are still stainless but have slightly magnetic tendencies. My local yard won't use them for that very reason, they still use the old school 'magnet on a pocketwatch chain.' One time I had to go to Harbor Freight (We love their blue gloves) and randomly picked up one of their magnets to try out. They are now the only magnet we use. Every other magnet just gets thrown in with shred.
Here is the magnet, they have a rubber grip handle not pictured. It's really smaller than it looks. The handle will allow for two gloved fingers to fit in when grabbed quickly.

It's great because while it is strong, it's not 'suck your will to live' strong and so it does not attract the 300 series stainless steel that HD magnets do. The main reason we love them is the handle though. Being able to quickly stick it on and off something, then return it to it's spot, and then quickly grab it again and check something else is worth the wait. The handle is big enough to get your fingers in using gloved hands and that's important too. Everybody has one here, one in the toolbox of our trailer, and I have 3 or so in my desk in case somebody loses these or something.
