Yeah, I don't do that.
I use pre-owned computers, pre-owned furniture, pre-owned tires, and pre-owned clothes. But, I'll never use pre-owned food unless I'm starving to death... literally.
guess I have never found anything good in regular sources but grocery stores when I was younger were a great source of food not starving but they throw out so much food that just looks worse for wear as in the way food normally looks and apples other fruit and things are great that way but now they have compactors so no go.
Eustice et a skwirl fresh runned over on mountin men. Dat count?
No I don't.
Can't say that I would do it with food, but anything else reusable doesn't get scrapped. Anyone interested in this should check out "Extreme Cheapskates" on TLC. Some of the stuff they do is even more questionable than food in a dumpster, but they do that too. Check out the episode where one guy buys a goat's head from a butcher with change he found in the gutters. BLAH!8-l
Goats head soup!
Yep! SOOO gross. And he actually cooks it for a family he's staying with as his "room and board" as part of his "free" vacation!
Personally I dont dumpster dive or get into the construction dumpsters. So, no, I would consume any food item from dumpsters. I do shop curbco occcasionally, but with gas prices only if in rte and spot something quick.
Kinda off-topic, but relAted to dumpsters, I was almost hit in the head by a man throwing scrap out of construction dumpster. It was directly by a sidewalk at a strip of stores and he threw electrical stuff onto the sidewalk right as I walked by!~ Gave me a startle..it was a deep dumpster so didnt see his head or anything. Couldnt complain, he was in there trying to make some cash and save the environment.
Nope not too keen
For all you know there could have been rat poison in there...and you got some on your 'stash is that for later?
it's all in your head. unless you are making and preparing all of your food the same argument applies to the food u eat.
I'm sure I have less chance of getting tainted, spoiled, rotten, or contaminated food from a grocery store than from a dumpster. Not saying it's impossible, just unlikely. The chances of quality food from a grocery store are exponentially better than the chances of quality food from a dumpster.
There's a documentary about dumpster diving, called DIVE! I saw it on Netflix, it's pretty good. These people have freezers full of meat that was near expiration date, fridges full of fresh produce, pantries full of snacks and canned goods. I don't see anything wrong with it, just be smart and be safe.
When I worked the produce section at a grocery store we'd throw stuff every night an every night we had people waiting on us to throw it out. An no they weren't homeless or any thing of the sort. Just folks who didn't want to spend money for whatever reason. We threw out a ton of crap that would just be wasted had it not been for those people.
Packaged salads? Yep threw those out 2 days before the date. Tomatos? Threw them out a lot to(tomato's get damaged easily).
Guess I'm trying to say..diving McDonald's may not be the best an healthiest choice, but there are people out thee who dive grocery store type places tho for food. Most still in it's package, an not messed with. It's just throw straight out.
I've never done it, but know a few who have an worked the above gig an saw even more folks who did it.
How ya think all them so called cheapskates get rich? They do their best to not pay for stuff if they can help it.
Each their own I reckon.
Sirscrapalot - Welcome to Dumpy's Dumpster, Dive on in!
Never ate from a dumpster but they did pass the Tennessee road kill law. If I run over it I can take it home for supper.
Most people that have worked in the restaurant biz have ate at the Bus Tub Buffet.
I have found food stuff in car at scrap yards. They sometimes get a bunch of repo cars. Checked a car and found a bag of canned goods and some cornbread mix. Sorted it out when I got home and noticed it was mixed brands. Came to the conclusion that the car owner had gone to a food pantry and then had the car repo'd before they could unpack. Someone had a truly lousy day! And the cornbread turned out great.
In this day and age where micro-organisms are evolving by the minute, consuming used or discarded food is like squeezing the trigger on a gun with one bullet while pointing it to your head. It's not a matter of if it will ever go off, it's when. Just keep on squeezing and you will see what I mean.
Goats head soup is actually quite good.
I know a guy who repairs vehicles , he once had a boston market truck get towed to his shop for repair . 2 days of sitting in the sun made it a mobile Petrie dish . No one mentioned it was fully loaded when it came in . But apparently the dry stock was removed the day it arrived by hungry mechanics .
Everybody knows that 1/2 of a hamburger from last Tuesday is much safer than a new hamburger made with fresh meat.
I don't get the people that do this with "used" food (Not the new stuff from the store), much less the ones that get pills this way. You're trusting somebody that you've never met to have safe practices, are praying that the items are not contaminated, and in the case of pills, are praying that the pills are actually what they say they are.
Now, let's see... Am I taking blood pressure pills, or the date rape drug?
matador: "Little. Yellow. Different."
If you did I hope you're talking about taking them yourself. The only problem is you won't remember what you did to yourself. :)
true...I wasn't the person that brought up date rape drugs in the first place though...I was just trying to talk about eating food out of the dumpster...I guess I have talked about finding some medications in the trash though so maybe that prompted this.
anyways, I think we can all agree rape and harmful microorganisms are bad.
We used to go to a certain chain cofee/donut shop right after closing around 11:00 if i remember. Anyways all the days pastries were put in one bag and tossed sitting on top. usually around 25 lb of donuts, bagels ext ext.. didn't ever bother me, but the circumstances need to be right.
"It is what it is". I know I have had a blessed life so far. Growing up my parents always provided us with food and shelter. As a adult, I have had more than I needed and provide for my family as I was taught to do so.
The wealthiest Americans (the top 1%) earn 20% of all income and own 40% of all of our nations wealth. The USDA estimates over 30% of food produced in our country, goes uneaten. This year our government estimates one out of six Americans will go hungry at times. As food production is concerned, we are the richest nation in the history of the world!
I consider my family, health and my continuing education as my greatest assets. I received some of that education in the military, including many survival skills. I was taught to live at all cost, to do what had to be done. This included eating what many would never consider (what not to eat as well). One of my first jobs was working in a grocery store, there I also learned many things. I learned that a can with a "dent" would go unsold. A apple with the slightest imperfection (a bruise) would not be bought. A date on a label has several purposes and that date has little to do with the contents being "bad". I also learned about retail markup, product marketing and packaging. That the package usually cost more than the contents. As a business man I have learned a lot too! I'm only as good as the people that work for me. That I need to attract, hire and compensate the best people. I have learned their "quality of life" is what motivates. I have learned all people have value, some more and some less.
As I have learned and have seen a lot, I know there's always more to learn. I know the quality of life is not getting better in our country. Today I don't get my food from a dumpster, but I know there is good food in dumpsters. If our country continues to go in the present direction, a dumpster is where I will be getting some of my food.
I won't be the only one. It's about income inequality!
As one of the food producers here in America, I hate to see so much food wasted. So much produce is rejected in the fields as not desirable instead of not edible. We always get our watermelons from the discarded ones left in my friend's melon field. Many times I've eaten peanuts from the samples from each load in the grading room.
I also used to work in a convenience store and saw the dented cans and torn label packages that were sent back unsold. I started then and still do buy the cans and bottles with torn labels because the contents are just fine and no one else seems to want them.
I don't remember ever getting food from an actual dumpster, but I'm not against eating stuff that is still sealed or bagged right off the shelf. I'd probably stay away from opened prepared foods, that is unless survival depended on it. Then it goes to the "do what had to be done" like bigburtchino said.
