Shiznit's getting real in the Ukraine. Russia's has boots on the ground and Putin looks to be calling Obama's bluff. Ukraine is not a member of NATO so technically is not protected by them...this will be getting interesting in the days to come.

You just knew it was going to get real once the Olympics were over, an he didn't have to play nice.
I'd say I'm surprised..but..I'm not.
Putin...oh if only I had words to describe him. Well I do, but their not very nice. lol. I think he's wishing for a flux capacitor and a delorian so he can go back to the 40s.
Then again..maybe I'm watching to much Back to the future.
Sirscrapalot - It is better to be feared than loved, if you cannot be both. - Niccolo Machivallei, such a fitting quote for this thread.
They invaded Georgia during the last Olymics ; ) They're saying it's going to be another "cold war" all over again but I believe it could get a little hotter than that
This is true Bear. An I agree. Welcome back to the 70s, and 80s.
Kids today wouldn't know what to do with an air raid. I can remember having to duck under a desk during those drills.
Sirscrapalot - When you disarm the people, you commence to offend them and show that you distrust them either through cowardice or lack of confidence, and both of these opinions generate hatred. -Niccolo Machiavelli
I havent really been following the situation over there, maybe I should start... Hope nothing ends up happening over here cause of it..
Glad I retired when I did, but hey is Uncle Sam wants me back, he can start me back at what I retired at.
Maybe not our place to get involved at all. I think our boys and girls have spilled enough blood in the last 10 years. Let someone else do the dirty work for once!
I agree Brass. Also I think some of these new governments that get put in place are worse then the one they took over...take Egypt for example.
Think about this.....what if the US govt said we are not going to send troops any longer. No more young americans dying for people that couldn't care less if we were there or not. Figure it out on your own! If you start something finish it or live with what you have and shut up!
Unless there is another Hitler type out there then I say get everyone home and let the rest of the world take care of its own problems.
Choices: 1. Build a tractor and be productive 2. Build a tank and destroy. - I think it's time we focus on building our country again!
War did not end the soviet union the first time and it won't bring around change this time. War and fear are money making tools nothing more. peace and love are the only lasting agents of change. It only took 2 tours as infantry to teach me that.
I don't think we'll put boots on the ground, Obama want's to down size the millitary. Sir, I remember the duck and cover drills back in the 50's and 60's, like that would do us any good. You could get killed under the desk just as easy as on top of the desk.
build some **** tractors!
I never said it would work Happy. Doesn't take a genius to realize a piece of wood isn't going to stop an atomic bomb from turning you into a pile of ash.
I'm not the idiot in the government that thought telling someone to hide under a desk was a good thing. ;) Putin is just following in the steps that came before him. Iron fist, an crush any who disagree with you. I never said a word for being for war. Personally, I find peace more preferable. Then again..I don't run a country. I will always support my troops, but I'd never wish for war.
War didn't end the USSR. Going broke did.
An thanks, now i got another topic for the quotes page. Oh an there are some good ones.
It is well that war is so terrible, otherwise we should grow too fond of it. - Robert E. Lee.
Older men declare war. But it is the youth that must fight and die. - Herbert Hoover
War is hell. - William T. Sherman
It's not a **** video game, to be glorified an trumpeted from the tallest mountain, as the makers of video games, an certain movies would have you believe.
EDIT : Excuse my rant, I'm just not a fan of war. An Happy I'm sure know, my rant and ire isn't directed at you my friend. It's a subject I feel strongly about. Just so folks don't get it all twisted..I do support my troops. Always have, an always will. It's the idiots that start wars, an send young men to die, that I don't like, an who this is directed to. Felt I should clarify. Sadly, the ones in charge, will never read this, an if they did, wouldn't care anyways. ;)
Sirscrapalot - Mankind must put an end to war before war puts an end to mankind. - JFK
While I don't generally comment on issues like this on a non-political weblog, I believe UN intelligence has shown that there is a Hitler-like problem going on in North Korea. Hopefully, the world community and not the US alone will address that problem quickly and firmly. And, with our current military technology, we can answer Kim Jung Un without a single pair of boots on the ground.
Never forget that every major conflict over the last quarter-century has been about dead dinosaurs. Access to production and transportation of petroleum is, and has been, the underlying reasons for far too much American blood being spilled. This time, though, it's not OUR access to fossil fuels, but Europe's that is in danger. Whatcha wanna bet that all those Parlay vooo mamma mia spreckenzee deucht folks are gonna be just clamoring for Uncle Sam to come put a stop to Big Bad Vlad over the coming weeks. You know... those same folks that wouldn't let us use their bases or even their airspace when it was OUR oil (and currency) we were trying to protect?

I don't see the 60s or the 80s, more like the 30s, in fact the Olympics itself was more about the host nations leader than about the olympics itself, almost a direct replay of the 1936 Olympics in Germany, under Hitler. In fact there were numerous similarities, including one I found interesting in itself, for the first time since 1936 did the USA sailing team fail to win a single medal.
I don't really think Putin is one, nor is North Korea's Kim Jong Un another Hitler, although he is similar, the next "hitler" will no doubt make the last one look like a wimp.
With all the things going on in the world around us, it is certainly no time to be sticking our heads in the sand
As always, just follow the money to see the real truth. This has been going on since the French/British wars and Waterloo when the Rothschild's used false rumors the French won the war to buy up the entire British stock market. "Those who ignore history are destined to repeat it".
I think we all agree on WW1 and WW2.
Both were wars that needed to be ended an us in them. WW2 we dilly dallied while Hitler took Europe. Then we did get involved. From Korea till now, the jury is still out if things were necessary. Oh wait..Korea was a "police action." Vietnam was a just a straight up cluster pluck. WW2 is a mark of shame for the entire world. It should never have gone as far as it did. It's estimated 60,699,200, to 85,000,000 an change died in total during WW2. From the Holocaust, to famine an disease. Did you know the only other war to come close to those numbers, was the Mongolian Conquest wars? It's estimated that the Allies lost close to 60 MILLION to the war, Holocaust, an resulting disease an famine. Axis side..11 million. The numbers are staggering.
The current ones, as Auminer, an Olddude point out, are all about the money. In my own so humble opinion. I'm avoiding politics here, I'm not a political person mind you, and I'd hate to see this thread shut down. I do feel that everything else has been nothing but about the money. Most wars are nothing but grand theft writ large by countries.

To this day, no matter how many times I've visit the monuments in DC, or the Museums and their exhibits on WW2, I'm still left with chills. I also get this while visiting the Korean War, and Vietnam monuments an exhibits. I shudder to imagine a similar war happening today. If folks haven't yet, you need to visit the Holocaust Museum, National History Museum's WW2 exhibit, and of course the monuments.
I don't like war, and I'm no war monger, but I do think we should've gotten in WW2 earlier then we did. Hundred of thousands, if not Millions of lives could have been saved. If a Hitler type ever came around again, I would surely be for ending it before it ever reached the staggering number of deaths to soldiers an civilians. One just can't turn their back on Genocide and other atrocities that were committed during WW2.
I will always support my troops though, whether I agree or not with the people who sent them there. Just my thoughts on things, an my .02 cents, or may 1.50. Ha ha! Sorry to veer off topic. :)
" In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the militaryindustrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.
We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together. " Dwight D. Eisenhower Military-Industrial Complex Speech, Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1961
I hate war as only a soldier who has lived it can, only as one who has seen its brutality, its futility, its stupidity. -Dwight D. Eisenhower
Sirscrapalot - I think that people want peace so much that one of these days government had better get out of their way and let them have it. - Dwight D. Eisenhower
Putin & Kim are both criminal "THUGS". What's happening in Ukraine is a "THUG" is taking what he wants (MONEY). Europe needs to police Europe. My $.02
I shortened your post somewhat, ssa, for brevity, by removing the parts we're all very well agreed on, and the parts where you were simply copy and pasting other peoples words.
We're all agreed in these things because we won those wars, we were in the right, we didn't want in them, and we only went because we were pulled into them against our will. We won them because we were ready, willing, and able to go there, undivided. I, for one, hope we'll be as ready, willing, able, determined, and undivided, the next time.
We're also agreed that wars are generally started by those who want to gain, by any means, something they simply don't possess.
Those "staggering" numbers are all too familiar ssa, to anyone who doesn't have their head in the sand.
Actually, SSA, I failed to see anything there we're not agreed on, excepting maybe your political endeavors. Maybe you've simply missed your calling. All you'd need to do, besides what you already do so well, is to promise everybody a free cellphone or something, and you'd be a shoe-in. You'd be indebted to absolutely none of your constituents, only to one person, and the best part of that is, one who isn't even in your state! hahahaha ; )
lol
I'm to honest Bear. I say what I feel, and I'm far to crass and blue collar to ever be allowed to make it in Politics. I like a cold beer, I enjoy a good cigar now an then, and I don't suffer fools. I'd either be censured, shot, arrested or run out of town. LOL
Far as my political leanings..I'm a little bit of everything. :) I'm for gun owners, the death penalty, a free market, an no big brother taking care of me from the cradle to the grave. I'm also pro - legalization, believe in helping your fellow man who needs it with conditions, not just a free check for you to spend wherever, an huge penalties if you get caught abusing or cheating that help. (foodstamps/whatever you want to call it.) I'm for war if certain conditions are met (WW1, WW2), but not for oil and profit, etc. but I'd rather give peace a chance. ;)
I could go on but..gotta leave some mystery. lol
Hence I'm not a political person, I don't have a party, the only party I subscribe to is common sense and the golden rule. Treat me with respect an I'll do the same. I'm an odd beast, but on the bright side...you'll always know where I stand, whether you love me, or hate me, agree or disagree. Heh. Good or bad, that's me in a egg shell.
I'll end with some words from one of my favorite sources for quotes...
Reader, suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself. - Mark Twain (notice, he doesn't separate the parties..nor do I. ha ha!)
My apologies all, more then you wanted to know about me I'm sure, but hey..welcome to the mind of a crazy person. ;)
Sirscrapalot - We the people are the rightful masters of both Congress and the courts, not to overthrow the Constitution but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution. - Abraham Lincoln
Sorry for the double post, but I'd like to thank KZ for this thread, an everyone who's posted so far. It's been kept civil, an I've enjoyed reading everyone's views. We all may not always agree, but I respect each and every one of you who've replied so far. Your showing remarkable class on such a sensitive subject. Thanks for keeping it civil! Me and the cooler salute you! ;)
Anyhow, done with schmooze fest, back to your discussion of more important things then my silly thoughts.
Sirscrapalot - You can lead a man to Congress, but you can't make him think. - Milton Berle
Agreed, SSA. It's come close but everyone is keeping it civil. Thanks.
I know we have a fine line when it comes to certain discussions and thanks folks for keeping it going.
We have certainly crossed boarders that Russia didn't like and turnabout is fair-play. Making threats that would have little or no impact can and will give the perception of weakness IMHO.
SSA...I will vote along your party lines and nominate Cory to run in 2016.
