sounds like a couple trips to the scrap yard are in the works...
Good luck with it OldDude
not sure what its about, but usually the civil devision is the harrasment arm. dam it just got done putting up over 300 ft of privacy fence and just got a call from my partner got 2 more loads of hard drives coming in tuesday.
ha! are they walking around over there on stilts, watching you?
Good luck with it, hopefully they don't give you to hard of a time and it'll be a quick easy, non-hassle fix!!
Hoping for the best for you on this one. Maybe the guy has a garage full of old computers and servers for you.
Quit being old n move faster...kidding kidding..lol...send em some doughnuts..problem solved
why can't people mind their own business
Zoning laws are for the benefit of everyone. If someone is out of compliance the authorities are obliged to deal with the issue. Some rules are silly and some are common sense when people live in close proximity to each other. The silly ones do not negate the value of common sense regulations.
If we scrap out of our homes in residential areas, it is not unreasonable for us to keep our treasures out of sight. I pull my stuff out onto the driveway while working on it and put it back in the garage when I am done. A neighbor complaining isn't always a sign of them being a busybody. It may be a sign that we are slobs.
Minding you own business is a wonderful concept but if your neighbor builds an eyesore of some sort you certainly have the right to object. To take an extreme example; I do not want an oil well drilled in my neighbor's back yard. I wouldn't want a stamping plant next door either. So a scrapper's stash may not pass as lawn art to those in the neighborhood.

I agree with mrbillbus. If i have to comply with local ordinances so do my neighbors. It pretty much sounds like you know what you are doing wrong by storing all that scrap outside and having to put up a privacy fence to try to hide it. If you store it out of sight in a garage or outbuilding or storage unit it would be better. Processing/storing escrap at a residence in gonna throw up red flags.
What I do in my backyard is no one elses business! If you have up fencing why sholud someone care? Don't make noise early or late, keep stuff to a minimum and others should not care! This could be another scrapper instead of a neighbor who turned you in... I know my neighbors and they know what I do, they have given me stuff in the past.
app1arently you didnt read all the posts.
1. im in the woods. (rural)
2. 300 ft of privacy fence
3 if you want a pit bull there are aeveral dozen running loose here
4. if you want drugs just go to the street in front of my house and yell real loud what you want how much and what you are willing to pay. Stand back with in 3 minuits there will be at least 5 dealers with any thing you want clinbing over each other to handle it.
nothing, nothing is visable to passers by my scrap yard starts 75feet from the road.
I impound any thing remotely hasardus including un broken crts and low grade boards.
nothing, bothing from my yard ends up on public or private land including the land fill. just sayin.
any way falce alarm, the subpoena was to testify at the trial of a local politician who missapropiated (stole) funds from the local fine arts org who I fix kilns for now and then no charge. aparently some one said they payed for a kiln rebuild I did free.
WHEW. It just strikes me wrong that I should stress over trying to make an honest living, and applying good comon sence and respect for others in the area while doing it.
**whew** seems like you dodged a bullet there :)
A politician stole money? That's a rare thing.
Happy for you that it wasn't over your scrap!!!
The only issue I would have living next to you out in the country is heavy metals leaching into the soil and getting into my well water (assuming you have a few tons of various metals and electronics out in the open rusting away). I live in the city where most people just ***** about neighbors not cutting their grass, parking derelict cars on the street, or turning the stereo up at 1AM.
There was a local guy who got the police on him because he was a compulsive hoarder that had his whole back yard full of junk (along with the house) in a tightly packed residential area. His house ended up getting torn down and all the junk was removed, not sure what happened to him.
Ummm, OK. I am a married guy. So pardon me. " What is Sex (question mark)" Lol. Sorry my question mark key is on permanant vacation.
On a good note. Olddude, I am glad you are helping your community in a charitable way. Also, I am glad that you are not in any kind of trouble with the police.
Its weird how much fear overcomes you when dealing with law enforcement.
I really hate the feeling and wish i did not always need to be afraid of what could happen.
The fear of the law comes from the fact that they can charge you for a dozen violations from doing pretty much anything.
Olddude
I didn’t reply to this thread before because I didn’t want to get you all worried.
What I thought was they stopped by due to the type of scrap you are now dealing with.
When I was a reseller of computers and parts *back in the 80-90’s I had to record every serial number off of every part before they could be sold or destroyed for that matter. I normally had to hold every item for at least 30 days until it was cleared city, county and state.
Had one system go out of state and sold to a DA in ILL. What a raid and pain.
Careful my friend!
seems the anxiety began when the name changed from "Peace officer" to LAW ENFORCEMENT " something to do with the words peace and force would be my guess.
Well if anything this thread got me to cleanup the computers and large printer- copiers I had in driveway. Op great to here of honest folks doing honest things.
Glad it wasn't about your scrap.
On the zoning question, it is always a struggle to balance the rights of the individual with the rights of his neighbors. It helps when people make the effort to see each other's points of view and work together in the spirit of cooperation instead of rushing into conflict. Wonder how often that happens? lol.
I wonder if the sherriff realizes he broke federal law by putting it in the mailbox? Glad it turned out to be nothing major!
