Looking for some advice on how to deal with a 32' aluminum trailer on my property. The trailer is accessible, there is pavement 6' away. I'm good with my hands and have tools like sawzall, cutoff wheels/grinder, etc. I could get access to a torch to cut up the steel frame underneath. I'm wondering what you think, whether it's worth my time/effort to try to scrap it myself or better to call someone to scrap it?
What is the trailer exactly?
I am not allowed to attach pictures but if you go to imgur<dot>com /a/J31UDfe it's there. It's a tractor trailer not lined i.e. not refrigerated. Box, doors all seem to aluminum the frame looks to be steel.
If it can be towed, I would try to sell it as is. If it is not road worthy you may have to cut it up. If you can get a torch, that would be the fastest way to cut it up.
Unfortunately it's not road worthy. What kind of torch would you recommend for the aluminum?
To answer one question invites other questions as far as doing it yourself. If you enjoy this type of work, can make a little cash, and learn something, in my mind yes. I would not use a torch on the aluminum (as it will just melt it) but a torch for the frame would be advantageous. As far as the type of torch, either one for acetylene or propane based on personal preference. I would recommend a quickie saw (demo saw and some call it a construction saw) with a metal cutting blade for the aluminum. Some cut use a grinder with a cutting blade, it just takes a little longer. Using a saw zaw would be expensive in the cost of blades. Good thing about aluminum, it does not spark so you can cut without fear of fire.
worked on many trailers like that, an oxy/propane torch would be my tool of choice, even for the aluminum. Yes it just melts thru the aluminum but the wear and tare on your body from the saw or grinder is worth it.
My experience with a torch and aluminum has not been positive in the past. Could you explain the process you use including the settings. Maybe a video would be valuable.Quote:
