Can any one help me with the difference between black cast and regular cast iron. Noticed black cast was at 1.70 a pound. Might have a concetion to buy a couple completely striped cracked cat blocks. They've even been through the Sault tank and are clean.
Haven't had much luck on Google mostly pots and pan and maker markings haven't found anything about engine blocks yet. Thanks for the help

I took a load of hms 1 in Friday had a look at the price sheet while I was waiting for my paper work. 160 ton. Asked about striped engine blocks from cat and she said some of the high out put blocks are black cast and they would test them first. News to me. Figured I ask here. Grey and black cast are different . Trying to figure easy way to tell so I don't buy and lose money.

Chevy small block with 010 cast into the blocks have a high nickel content.
Some but not all diesel engine cylinder liners could be made from a chromium / cast iron alloy.
There are methods of identifying a metals composition using acids which are considered non destructive.

The skinny on GM engine blocks alloyed with nickel.
Identify the block casting number, which you can find on the top of the bell-housing ridge (where the transmission connects). If you see a "++" after the casting number, then it's a high-nickel block.
Remove the harmonic balancer and crankshaft pulley from the front of the crankshaft. Remove the water pump and timing cover from the front of the engine. Identify the block casting just above the crankshaft main journal.
Note the numbers you see there. They indicate the block's nickel and tin content by volume. If you see an 010 and 020, the block has 10 percent tin and 20 percent nickel by volume.
An 010 or 020 by itself indicates the block's nickel content as 10 or 20 percent, respectively.

ALL Chrysler/Dodge V8 engine blocks from 60's to mid-late 70's (at least) are also high nickel.
Simple solution to problem just ask the yardman to see an inventory of their black cast then ask for or purchase a small sample to perform some acid testing on.
Nitric acid is commonly used to identify metals, a small drop onto a filed clean surface free of oil will produce colors specific of those used in the alloyed metal. Adding a bit of heat will definitely speed up the chemical reaction.
If your paranoid of using acids use a grinder for spark testing.
