Mega chunk of COPPER wire

This is the biggest chunk of solid copper I've ever come across. 5' & 35lbs before stripping. Some kind of underground wire. Was a b!tch to strip. Enjoy

what was the finished weight? too bad it wasn't a longer piece..! how did you come across it?

My dad just gave me a couple of pieces of this from his work. How did you strip it? The biggest part of insulation also stinks when cut. Any body know what it is

I'm guessing there was 8-10lbs of weather stripping on it, so about 25lbs.

Yeah, longer and more of em.

I stripped it with a __________stripper. But, before I had that machine, when I got large pieces I would cut them into about 12"-16" pieces. Then put your piece in a vice. Then using a reciprocating saw with a wood blade cut lengthwise as far as the blade will reach' then flip the wire 180, lined up with your first cut, and cut the rest of the length of it. I use a wood blade just because they are longer than the metal blades. (Less cutting) On this stuff I would say you would have to make your lengthwise cuts at least 4 times. 12oclock, 3oclock, 6, 9. The outer layer comes off like rubber, but the inner white stuff is quite firm. Then just pry out the copper with a screwdriver. Hope that makes sense.

As far as the smell, it's because the wire got hot when it was in use. Personally I love that smell, cuz it means more scrap :D

I tried the sawzall method and it got me ****** off. So I just used the knife

I have been able to get a couple of cable like that, just not quite that thick. I used my angle grinder with the thin metal cutoff blade, seemed to work pretty well, sliced right thru the hard rubber covering.

What would that kind of cable come from?

I believe it is underground wire, but I could be wrong. Weatherstripping says 128kv. That's a lotta juice.

I found one of these in the woods once, about three feet long, Man I was like a Kid in a candy store!!!:)
